Need to pick HD.

I am thinking of getting a really high-end HD and I am told the 10,000 RPM raptors are the go, so which one should I get? I want to get one of the 150GB ones but which one?

The one that is most expensive $209 has a clear window so you can watch the hard drive in action. The cheaper one does not have a window. They are exactly the same but just one has a window while the other does not. So it's up to you if you want a window or not . I got a 150GB raptor myself (without a window even though i wanted one with a window) and it is awesome.

I had a RAID with two Raptors...it was fast but not that much faster than my single 160GB 7200RPM drive I currently have. Don't get me wrong, they are really nice drives, but don't expect a huge performance increase or anything.

The samsung spinpoint S hard drives are even faster than the raptors in everything but seek time. And they're only 7200rpms.

And remember (i mentioned this in another thread) a hard drive works like a cd-rom, remember that less and less data can be stored in the inner area of the disk, compared to the outer, so data stored at the outside edge of the disk can be read FASTER than data on the inside of the disk (you following me?)

And since the data on the Raptor is less densely packed on the disk, the drive begins to slow down with less data stored on it than with a conventional drive....

So real world performance, you may honestly have an edge with a standard 7200rpm drive if you're going to have quite a bit of data stored on the drive. And even moreso if you go with an especially fast 7200 like the aforementioned samsung S (and no i don't use a samsung, i use a cheap-o seagate, and i'm completely satisfied with it )

That's the article that compared the samsung with the raptor.

I plan on sleepin in this morning, so i wont be able to defend myself when someone reads my above claim and becomes irate in the morning.

I am pretty sure I am going to go with a single raptor, and once it gets filled I will discuss getting a secondary.

Now to go with a window or not I think I am going to get a window, I think it would be worth the extra $10.00.

I would get a window if your in to eye-candy! Just hopefully you have a place to put the drive to view it!. Not sure about others but I have noticed a huge difference moviing windows and programs to this drive.
