    You mean linux? Everything. Linux is a free os maintained by volunteers. XP is made by a company -microsoft- and costs way too much money.

    Sketch Up... google made it also 3ds max is good, but quite complicated. It's used for making stuff for big games.

    Laptop Battery ?

    I think it hurts the battery if you leave it plugged in all the time. If you want, you could calibrate the battery. This could help in getting longer life. If you're leaving it plugged into ac power, then take the battery out (some laptops dont support this though).

    Linux Installation

    It's pretty simple. Lets say you're going for Ubuntu (a popular, easy to use distribution), just go to the ubuntu website, download the latest version, burn with a cd/dvd burner and put into computer. You'll have to go to bios and select boot from cd, but thats pretty straight forward.
