New System For Uni - Looking For Custom Build

Daisy has given you a good range there. All of them are going to be more than suitable for what you want to be doing. In terms of future proof(ness), the only thing that really keeps demanding better and better computers are games. A four or five year old computer will run Office 2007. For what...

    AMD Athlon 3000 64bit

The Athlon's numbers represented the intel P4 chip that they were comparable to, so a 3000+ should be roughly similar to a 3.0Ghz P4, in theory. It's because the AMD chips were more efficient - so could be slower and therefore cheaper. Hope that helps, Doug.

    Looking for a Motherboard..

Are you planning on using/have a separate graphics card? If yes, then you do not need the integrated VGA - your monitor will connect via the graphics card. If no, you do need the integrated VGA - your monitor will connect to the motherboard. Hope that helps, Doug.

    Please comment

Spec's (RAM, CPU etc.) wise it will be good for photoshop. Only thing I would say is screen size. When it comes to editing pictures the bigger the better. I personally think that 15.4" is perfect compromise for a laptop, 17" is waaay to big, but 14.1" maybe a tad too small. Having said that...

Looking into an Eee 1000HE, how bad is the integrated graphics?

Lucky boy! :P My laptop has Intel 945GM, I am assuming they are pretty comparable - if not someone please correct me - and it plays AOE2 and other games, even Sims2, Rollercoaster Tycoon3. I would imagine that the graphics are on a par with the processor etc, so if the processor is upto...

    64 bit or 32 bit ?????

I know that SolidWorks 2008 and 2009 work on XP 64-bit, as does Photoshop CS3. We use them at work. I'm guessing that they should work on Vista. If other bits don't you can always dual boot as previously suggested. Hope that helps, Doug. EDIT: Also I know that AutoCAD didn't work on the...

    Article on how spamming works....

Sorry Guys, didn't mean to upset you. You can easily see that it is a link to the BBC website when you hover your mouse over it, and I thought the fact that I have nearly 200 posts might suggest that I am not a spammer..... Unless, I work for the BBC..?? :P Direct link...

    Comparing Two PCs?

I have a 3.4Ghz Pentium 4 at work, with 4GB RAM, and it does everything I want quick. This includes using SolidWorks and other big pieces of software. As for lots of programmes I will usually have a couple of webpages, SolidWorks, PDF's, Word documents open all at the same time. Touch wood, I...

$1500 Budget Desktop for Computer Programmer

Thats a good build that daisy has put together there but you do not need to spend anywhere near that amount of money to do what you want to do. Stuff like the i7 is overkill, as is the video card. Unless the video card is supported there is no advantage to having a $300 card to the...

Which graphics card shall i buy?

You can't put a PCI-E x16 card into a PCI-E x1 slot. Or a PCI slot. It won't work, and physically won't fit - if you've looked at your mobo you will see the PCI-E x1 is a tiny little one. Hope that helps, Doug.

Computer for making music and graphics/web design

Photoshop etc do NOT require an expensive graphics card. 2D rendering is easy, and done by the CPU. For what you want to be doing a quad core will probably be an advantage as these are CPU intensive applications. Also a lot of RAM is a good idea - 4GB should be good. For photo editing the bigger...
