    building computers for friends...

Is it only me who finds it a bit weird that you want to make your friends pay for your help?! Do you make them pay if they want your help painting a room or moving house? Surely if it's amongst friends a box of beers or something would suffice?

What do you prefer Netbook or laptop?

It depends on what she wants to do with it. You need to give more detail to get useful, relevant responses. Browsing the net, occasional letter writing etc., more than good enough. Video editing and gaming, not good enough.

Acer Aspire One webcam not working - USB device malfunctioned

Thanks a lot Cracker, that guide will be really useful. Where do you think the cable will most likely be loose: on the motherboard connection or the connection to the webcam board? I imagined the latter, hence why I was thinking about removing the screen surround. Cheers, Doug.

Acer Aspire One webcam not working - USB device malfunctioned

Hi (and happy new year) all. I have an Acer Aspire One AO531h with Windows XP. The built-in webcam is not working. The problem seems to have developed from a previous issue, which was if the screen was opened too far it would stop working, with the sound of a USB device being disconnected...

    Windows 7 32-bit or Ubuntu 64-bit?

Do you need 8GB of RAM? If you do nothing that requires that amount of RAM then use whichever you prefer, even if that means 'wasting' 4GB of RAM. Knowing what you do with your computer/programs do you use will help people give you advice.

    8gb on a single stick

The graphics card does not render in terms of producing images for publishing (i.e. exported tiffs etc.). The CPU does that. If your wife regularly creates high quality renderings then a multi-core CPU will be an advantage as the program can break the image down into quarters say and give each...

    8gb on a single stick

Why? Unless you are creating assemblies with 100,000's parts, no. Look at specs below. Why? CAD programs do not require a super powerful graphics card, as the link below clearly shows. By the very nature of the linear boolean operations the have to happen one after another, there for...

Laptop shutting down when power is plugged in.

Have you tried using it on mains power but without the battery attached? I'm not sure if this will help narrow down the problem but it may be a work around for now.... Doug.

What operating system for netbook? Tried XP/Ubuntu...

OK, I'll give Mint a shot. Is there any benefit in using the "lightweight LXDE desktop" over the GNOME version in terms of performance/battery life? Thanks, Doug.

What operating system for netbook? Tried XP/Ubuntu...

I have tried XP and Ubuntu on my netbook. I like the look and feel of Ubuntu, but with XP I get a hour to hour and half more battery (5hrs compared with 3.5~4hrs). Whilst XP does everything I need, I find it looks/feels outdated now. Both operating systems run smoothly on my netbook, which is...

PC build with AutoCAD in mind (Low Budget)

CAD packages do not need a high performance video card. When talking about commercial software there is a huge difference between what is 'supported' and what is required for use. I used to run (when I was at uni) Unigraphics NX7.5 and SolidWorks 2010 using my integrated graphics (HD4200)...

Please help me decide which to purchase

No, but I'm not sure what model it was I was using. I was just referring to various UltraSharp monitors around the office.

    one machine,2 slide shows,2 monitors

That will happen with PowerPoint too. I had this exact problem at an exhibition just last week, this is what I did: You will need to start your secondary monitor slideshow first, open it as normal and select "Presenter Mode" to have the show running on the second monitor. Then open the second...

Please help me decide which to purchase

I used an UltraSharp at work and the picture was amazing, noticeably different than other monitors. Having said that I have no experience with the HP. I do a lot of CAD work, and generally find that the bigger the screen the better/easier it is to work. Hope that helps, Doug.

Getting my main email address notified when my other address is emailed

What email services do you have? Hotmail, gmail etc. can all be set up to forward any emails coming into the inbox to another account. You have to remember though, to reply from the original address it was sent to you have to go to that email box! Try googling your mail provider and...

Amazon.co.uk as well. And they do Nectar points as well, so if your gonna be buying a systems worth of parts they'll add up! When I built my computer ebuyer was cheapest for everything (was about year and a half ago now though). Doug.

New video card (HD 5770)= Blue screen at boot (whilst "Loading Windows")

Hi. I recently purchased a second hand card and have just installed it in my computer. First I uninstalled the Catalyst Control Center from my integrated graphics, and installed the card (XFX HD5770). When I first booted it started up fine, the screen resolution was rubbish as I hadn't...
