Question: Does the Phenom II NEED to have an 8pin CPU plug? The board has tape over the "extra" 4 pins. It also has tape over the "extra" 4 pins inthe 24 pin power connector. To me, this implies that it is Optional.

If you've just created the partition, you don't need to format. Make sure you're working on the correct drive also. If you've made a mistake, you can just Delete the partition.

No, your RAM is not overclocked. By default, the Core i7 settings run RAM at 1066, the maximum supported by Intel. Due to the Core i7 QPI, you're basically overclocking your processor to run the RAM at it's default speed.

AVG and Spybot... Lots of useless stuff there. Download Avira Antivir Free or Microsoft Security Essentials, and get rid of AVG and Spybot. You'll be amazed when you see the difference... Side note: Why people disable the beautiful Vista UI to make it look like a Win 95 turd is beyond me.
