Are you sure you choose to scandisk only C: drive?If you don't need the floppy,just unplug the power connector from it and forget about it.

Check if the cpu fan is placed correctly,check the temps also. Remove the 2nd ram module to check if it's a memory problem.

Have you tried to boot Windows under Safe mode? Google about the workgroup thing,I don't think you must format the hard disk cause of that.

When you say "lockup" you mean it freezes and you have to restart?If yes check how your computer's temps are?Might be overheating problem..I don't think so,but check it just to be sure,

You could clean the drive's laser,it might help.If you can't find a new one that fits to your laptop,you could get an external one.

Tabbed browsing makes your work easier,but the more tabs you have open the more memory is needed.With 256mb RAM your mac will be slow if you open many tabs.

The monitor is not getting power from the computer's power supply ;) But I think the PSU you mentioned is enough for the hardware you're using.

Have you installed some kind of software for encrypting files?
