    barebones setup

S478 just means Socket 478, it's an older chip socket for intel's, the newest being S775. Yes you can use your old CD, HDD, and GFx card, however if you change the CPU and mobo you will most likely need to re-install Windows on the drive. Any manufacturer will work for you (I don't think you're...

Sony Vaio Laptop - Need 6-pin firewire

Unless there's a PCMCIA 6 pin card like TOO mentioned there's not really a way you can upgrade. Laptops are difficult to upgrade and are generally left stock except for Ram, CD/HDD. If you got a decktop machine you can find plenty of PCI cards to plug into it to use the 6-pin Firewire.

Which to buy: used or refurbished

Generally speaking a refurbed was a broken laptop which was sent back and repaired by the company and a used is just that, used but not broken (unless stated). I usually buy new, not used or refurbed, but if you must then I suggest a refurbed laptop.

    barebones setup

It is possible that it would work. I too have one of those boards and had it running a 1.3Ghz Duron. One of the DDR slots died on mine and eventually the whole board went. My suggestion is don't chance it, buy a new mobo and cpu (such as a S478 board and chip) and buy new ram and if necessary a...

    is this able

That's not a good answer, but yes, it will probably be able to play them at the same time unless there's some sort of DirectX conflict. And you are going way overboard with your machine, you don't need nearly anything as powerful to play those games on maxed out settings. What brand is the...

How can you answer with that when you don't even know what he's talking about? Right clicking on different things does different things depending on what you click on. A little more info would be helpful to solve your problem.

    Help with wiring

Uh YEAH, to run you need all 24 pins (or 20 pins) plugged in. That could definately be what's causing your problems. Try another PSU or see if you can push that other pin back into its place.
