Help with wiring

Alright, set up everything, and I just need to wire everything. Could someone post maybe what like each place means? Like the manual explains what things are such as Front Panel Jumper and FDD Connector and IDE1/IDE2 stuff... Also, I tried starting the thing up, (I think I got like half of the wiring inside, but the other half not) and nothing happend, the fan or anything didn't even start up. Don't know if that's supposed to happen... Last, I didn't put any thermal paste on the processor. Do you litteraly have to put that paste on there?

the front panel jumper should be a cable coming from the front panel to (on mine) the bottom right hand side of your mobo. in your manual see if one says power button or something. my jumper was like this

....
...

and my plug was like this

.
.

(for my power button)

so i tried plugging it in a million different ways until i found the right one

.|..
|..
the | is where the plug went. the other things i just let hang there. my case may be different then yours. my plugs were marked power, hdd status, etc.

With the temperatures that modern-day processors run at, without thermal paste/pad/grease, etc, you can fry your cpu in less than 10 seconds.

hey dude, did you consult your main board manuel. I'm sure all the jumpers and connection are perfectly laid out. OR you can check your MB site for detials. The connections should be all coded for the right connections.

BUILDING COMPUTERS 101 I don't know why everyone always skips over this.

Lies, thermal grease/pad/paste helps with the transfer of heat, it isn't necessarily required, but it is highly advised.

Alright, I'll go get some thermal paste from like bestbuy or a local store. Thanks Lax, I did see the sticky that you showed me, but I never read all the way to the bottom which was the important part.

Alright, finished wiring and everything, but for some reason the thing isn't starting. Is everything supposed to hook up, like the monitor and the keyboard and all? Because, for some reason, literally nothing is starting up. Shouldn't the psu atleast run its own fan? I'm not sure if it's a problem with the wiring or the psu...

did you read my post about the front panel connector. if it dosent fit in all the pins try a bunch of diffent setups

Oh I see, I did read your post way2evil, just didn't see how important it was.

Hmm, having some trouble with these... Here's what I have:

+ p led
- p led
reset sw (With two pins, like the two " . . "
H.D.D. led

I think this is what you were talking about?

As a few others have said, it's not required. Our family pc with a Celeron D 2.7Ghz had no thermal paste, but it idled around 65C. But it is strongly recommended.

Alright, I managed the thing to light up. What I mean by that, is that the green light comes up on the front side of the case, nowhere else... But for some reason, nothing else happens, just that the thing lights up when I turn the psu on and off. When I try and click the start or restart button, nothing happens. Help plz, and am getting kind of desperate...

thats it. i only plugged in power tho because i was gettin pissed sittin there for an hour trying to put in some stupid pin. is one of your things a 3 pin connector (like reset switch) hdd led if you cant get it dont worry. i didnt. post up a diagram in dots of the place on the mobo you plug in those connections and also a diagram in dots of your power switch and reset switch connectors

How about you give your brand and model of motherboard which you should have done first off, and we can tell you right where to plug everything in.

Of course, I'm sorry :) The brand is a Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro-SLI ATX AMD Motherboard slot. For some reason, it's not lighting up again, but it must be because I unplugged something to try and get it to start :/

Alright, I've just wasted another 30 min on this darned thing, and for some reason, I can't even get the lights to turn on now... I'm getting quite frustrated with this, and I'm not sure what to do...

Yeah, ok, I'll do that, but what do you think I should say? Hi, I'm having trouble with one of your motherboards, it's an ______ and I am having trouble starting it up. Like that?

say i dont know where to plug the front panel jumpers from my case into the mobo. and if they say to call the people that make the case tell them they said to call you

Starting with the upper left of the F_PANEL
....__....
.....
the first 2 pins, pins 2, 4 are positive and negative of the power LED (respectively) next 2 pins which would be 6,8 is the power switch. pins 1,3 (below 2,4) is the HDD LED with positive being 1 and neg. being 3. Pins 14 and 20 are the speaker, positive being 14, negative on 20. This was all in the manual on page 23 in case you were wondering.
