    New Laptop

well then it will be heavier... and he may aswell use the one he's got. You don't need it to be big, I can word process on mine quite easily and its really light. Also you don't need anything special to word process. I could do it on my P3 1GHz laptop if I wanted, that would still be fine.

    Will this processor work?

I'm not too sure, Dell arent normally up with you doing your own upgrades on Desktops. If it does work I wouldn't think you would need to add anything. Depends what your PSU apmage and wattage is

Windows on an optical drive-less system

aslong as the laptop supports usb boot...if it supports usb boot then you can boot from the cd anyway, thats why I didnt bother mentioning it. booting from a network drive would be effort

Windows on an optical drive-less system

dont suppose you have a floppy drive for it? It doesnt work with XP as far as I have experienced. I assume you're wanting XP on it? There is a way to do it...but it involves installing another OS first such as 98...it's not fun at all and I think you have to keep your hard drive in fat32 format...

    New Laptop

something like my backup laptop would be fine then :) Bought it off ebay.it has no internal drives which makes it lighter and is a 12" screen so its pretty small. you can check out the spec here. There a different versions of this laptop, I think this is one of the fastest. Mine is a bit slower...

Hard drive crashed... need to recover "LOST FILES"

Welcome to the forum! Please be sure to read the rules :) and introduce yourself on the welcome thread. Deleting the partition wasnt the best idea as that removes the data. There are some programs (none that I know of that are free...) That can still retrieve the data though. for example, I use...

    Whirring sound...my fan?

Welcome to the Forum! Please check out the rules :) yeh sounds like a fan, open up the case when its making the noise and listen to where its coming from. It normally means that the bearings are going, there isnt really a fix for that, you basically just have to get a new fan or suffer the noise.

    Won't start up

If it's not the hard drive that it originally had then its probably that its got an install of xp on it that wasnt for that computer, thats normally the reason for such things. I would advise re-installing xp onto it then see if you have any problems. I assume it does the same if it's in safe mode?

PC doesn't read External Hard Drive

you can use gnome partition manager (aka gparted). Download it from here get the latest iso image, burn it to cd then boot from it. It will give you the option of what file system to use. Why are you using fat32 rather than ntfs anyway?

Do I need XP's firewall if I use a router?

No you don't need to, though windows may complain if you don't. On my computer at work I don't have my firewall on but at home I do (even though I've got a firewall router...) I think it's more just for "peace of mind" than it actually doing anything extra, might be wrong though

    LAN gaming on laptops

there are 8 wires in a network cable, you send data through the same wires on every RJ45 port, you crossover some of the wires (cant remember how many) so the data doesnt conflict and "meet in the middle". You need this for absolutely everything, for routers, hubs etc they cross the wires over...

PC doesn't read External Hard Drive

what you could try is going to control panel -> administrative tools -> computer management -> disk management and see if it registers in there when you plug it in. it might just not have a partition.
