1 gig upgrade

Hey guys im looking to upgrade my cousins computer with some more ram. He has 2 512 sticks of ddr 400 ram. He only has 2 slots for ram and I was wondering if taking out 1 stick of 512 and replacing it with a 1 gig stick would be worth it? Or for some actual results in preformance should I take out both 512 sticks and put in 2 1 gig sticks? Would replacing only 1 512 with 1 gig ram still give a good speed increase or is it worth the extra 39 dollars to get another stick?

If he is running them in dual channel mode you would only be able to utilize 1gb of the RAM anyway. If he is not running in dual channel mode which I'm guessing he is not then yeah you may notice a small difference in performance increase. Depending on what the computer has to do (OS wise and apps used) you would probably be better off selling the 2x 512 sticks and buy 2x 1gb sticks.

It would be best to get 2x1GB sticks so you can run them in dual-channel (if your mobo supports dual-channel, that is) What motherboard does your cuz have (CPU-Z will tell you, download it for free)? Even if your mobo doesn't support dual-channel, 1GB increase would yield better results than a 512MB increase, IF the memory capacity is being the bottleneck in the first place.

Remember to make sure the motherboard supports 1gb sticks of memory before you upgrade, some motherboards don't; however you maybe able to flash the motherboard to accept 1gb sticks - look in your manual or google search it before buying anymore memory.

Yeah I upgraded an old computer that had 512MB of DDR RAM. I found a 512MB stick of DDR RAM on sale so I bought it and installed it. I just found out later when looking at the motherboard specs that it can only support up to 1GB. If it can support 2GB, 2 is definitely better than one, but not if it only supports one.
