1080p to 4K Laptop Display Upgrade on Asus TUF F17, is it possible?

So recently I purchased a 2022 Asus TUF F17 laptop off Amazon considering it seemed to be a great piece of equipment for the price point. The model is FX707ZE but there was an oversight on my behalf, the display, which is total garbage. That being said I did some research and apparently people are able to upgrade certain display based on very specific compatibility requirements. Causing me to spend the last 5 hours hyperfocusing on what seems like it's never been done to this specific model.

I want to upgrade it because of how terrible it is. I was able to find an upgrade 4k replacement panel with the exact same dimensions, same 40 pin EDP connection, same voltage, everything's the same hardwarewise. Except for the fact that I have a flat and this one's considered a slim panel which is about 2 mm off..

The question is, will it work?? The laptop currently has the stock B173HAN04.9 and I am trying to upgrade it to a B173ZAN06.8. I've already tried contacting Geek Squad and Asus's Tech support to no avail. They know even less than I and were completely dumbfounded by the idea, dismissing it almost immediately. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you've done your research hardware-wise. One concern I'd have (besides the panel physically fitting into the lid) is the 3050Ti struggling to run games at that resolution.

You said you purchased this laptop recently, is it still within the return period? Maybe it would be worth returning it and shopping for something with a better screen.

Another angle that both protects your investment and gets around the bad display issue would be to buy a 4K monitor and hook it up. There's a number of monitors out there less than $300 with decent response times.

Otherwise, hardware mods like this are risky and unless someone has done this exact thing with this exact model before, you're going to struggle to find help. But if you're confident in disassembling laptops (they're tricky), don't mind risking a $1000 computer, and everything works, hell yeah!

Hey Lucas, thanks for the feedback. Reading your post kinda got me questioning this experimental upgrade altogether. So I did some more research and right when I was about to throw in the towel, I was able to find the 2022 Dell XPS 9720, boasting a RTX 3050 (mine is Ti) on a 4k Touchscreen nonetheless, 16gb Ram, 2Tb...

I mean, I really don't see how this is a risk.. and even if I were to get a refund. The amount of money I would have to drop far exceeds my current investment if I were to find what my final product will be.

The factory 2022 TUF F17 came with:
i7 12700H
Nvidia RTX 3050 Ti
2x8Gb Ram DDR5 4800Mhz
1Tb SSD Gen3
and the cost was about $1100

My upgrades will be:
2xNextorage Japan 2TB M.2 2280 with Heatsink PCIe Gen4.0 NVMe NEM-PA2TB/N SYM Maximum Transfer Rate Read: 7300MB/s, Write: 6900MB/s
$260

2xG.Skill RipJaws DDR5 SO-DIMM Series (Intel XMP) 64GB (2 x 32GB) 262-Pin DDR5 4800 CL38-38-38-76 1.10V Dual Channel Desktop Memory F5-4800S3838A32GA2-RS
$180

17.3"4k 120HZ LED LCD SCREEN B173ZAN06.8 EDP40PIN 3840X2160 UHD NON-TOUCH
$145 (lucky eBay find)

That's roughly $1700 bucks give or take, anything in the market with those specs will run at least $2200 to $2500, I'm just crossing my fingers hoping that the eBay display wasn't a fluke, as its been shipped but will not arrive till next weekend.

Everything else is currently purchased or on the way, if yall want, I'll keep updating this thread with pics and whatnot.

You can get something much better than 3050ti in that price range, beefing up an anemic system is kind of a wasted investment.

Good luck.
Tell you what, you find me the same or better specs for 1700 to 1800 bucks, I'll return everything and personally send you a case of brews. Lol
