10minute XP shutdown!

I have an HP 510n desktop, 1.2G Celeron, 512MB, running XP. Just upgraded to SP2. With only Macafee and ZoneAlert running, it take 10 minutes to shutdown (not a typo). Just goes to blue screen for 10min, then shuts off (sometimes longer). Startup is ~4 minutes. Before the SP2 upgrade it was ~4min startup and 2min shutdown.

The 4min startup does not bother me so much, but 10min for a shutdown??

I have disabled everything in msconfig/startup (exc Zone and Macafee), defrag/diskclean, ran Spybot and ran CCleaner, with no improvements.

Any suggestions? I really don't want to revert to pre-SP2, trying to stay up to date with Microsoft updates, etc.

thanks

Are you running anything major when you shut down? or are you clean when you do? when my HDD overheats, BF2 takes up to 6-10 mins to exit, it may be something like that also.

I would recommend reformating and reinstalling windows you have a serious issue going on there.

I would run lots Spybot and Ad-Aware, and also run a virus scan. If these don't solve your problem, then I second cell4me in saying that you should reformat.

Any suggested cleaners?

you might be very infected with spyware, viruses.

I've used Spybot, AdAware, and a couple others I can't remember. I'm running Macfee (up to date).

Any suggestions?

thanks!

What is BF2?

Yes I've already run Spybot and Awaware.

Reformat......I was hoping I didn't have to do that....:(

Is there a step-by-step method for doing a reformat? I realize I'll have to back up all of my files.....

Since my original Windows XP disks are pre SP2, do I need to do the "dozens" of updates from Microsoft to get back to the current SP2?? or is there a shortcut??

ahhhhhhh...........
How long will this take to do?

thanks again

I would download Service Pack 2 and put it on a disc so you do not have to get it from Microsoft Update.

Also, step-by-step, reinstalling Windows.

When you reformat and download windows update it will get all the updates at the same time...you will have to download SP2 seperate though.

Reformating is your very best option though because it will tell you if it is an operating system problem or a hardware problem.

Actually before you reformat.

Often times slow shutdown times are related to driver conflicts and issues. (Vista will tell you this, just look in it's CP). The problem here is that Windows has to shut down all those devices, right? So if there's some kind of driver issue, it may take longer to communicate the "halt" commands to those components.

I reccomend trying some driver updates first. Also check to see if one or two of the apps that's always running (like background apps and services) isn't acting up. I was using a program called trayit for a while, to send applications off the taskbar and onto the tray if so desired. As it turns out, something in that software had an issue with something else, and both the service and background application were causing slow shutdown times.

Bottom line, I reccomend checking out both before going through a reformat on something like this.

Hope this has helped, sc7.

I'm having the same problem, I tried to shut down my HP Pavilion 513n about 15 minutes ago. It's been on the blue "Windows is shutting down...." screen for a while now. Should I just leave it like that and see how it is in the morning?

Have you made any changes that you recall, and everything ran fine before the shutdown problem? As an example, I stupidly enabled P2P connectivity in Windows Components and immediately had shutdown problems. Disabling it solved the issue. Maybe you enabled something and need to disable it, if this shutdown problem is recent.

I did a system recovery and the computer runs faster. The only problem I've had is it getting stuck on the blue screen when shutting down
