120/128 GB SSD for double boot?

hi guys,

I'm building a rather high performance system, on which I will install Ubuntu or Red Hat Linux and W7.
I was wondering if a 128 (120) GB SSD would be large enough to have both OSs and some (not many) extra programs?

If so, which would you advise out of these?

OCZ AGT3-25SAT3-120G € 89.9
Samsung 830 Series MZ-7PC128D € 96.9
OCZ VTX3-25SAT3-120G € 99.9
Crucial CT128M4SSD2 € 104,90
Corsair CSSD-F120GB3-BK € 99.9

other?

Thanks!

I'd actually go for a 256GB drive and split it in half - 128GB each, should be enough.

I'd go for either the 830 or the M4.

The 120gb should be enough if you don`t use a lot of extra 3rd party software.

I would give 70gb to windows and 50gb to linux

I have had the both ocz drives and would say the vertex is slightly better, although you should go for the new vertex 4 range not vertex 3

Yeah, forgot to mention. I know 256 would be better, but I have budgetary limits ... Unless I could save on other components this isn't an option. Sad but true.

For dual boot I suggest you make "System Reserve" 200mb or so instead of the default Windows 100mb.

If you limit which programs you're going to install on the SSD then 128GB will probably just be about big enough to squeeze two operating systems onto.

I recommend taking a look at the SanDisk Extreme 120GB too. :)

You will have about 100GB for windows. And 128 GB is enough to run Windows 7, BF3, and several other programs and quad boot Linux operating systems. Personally I find that unless you are running CAD, you don't need more than 20GB on Linux ever.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I'm getting a little scared though, that with some additional programs like e.g. Office the disk will be too small. Perhaps I'd better stick with XP? Don't directly find any advantages for using W7 on that desktop, and I'll probably work more in Linux.

Would XP pose a problem with SDD?

Still, if I could reduce some costs on other components, I might save enough for a 256 GB version. See this topic.

thanks for any suggestion!

There will be plenty of room. Besides openoffice is in Linux by default on most distros, so your better off with that option. You will be absolutely fine using a 128GB disk.

XP will not have TRIM and may need some work to get ACHI working, but otherwise will pose no trouble at all.

Ok, thanks for the reassurance!

I guess the choice comes down to either the

OCZ VTX4-25SAT3-128G
Samsung 830 Series MZ-7PC128D
or
Crucial CT128M4SSD2

(I guess SSD2 is a newer edition than SSD1?)

All three of them are mostly suggested in other topics, with the 830 slightly ahead it seems.
Also, there seem to be different kinds of the 830, a basic (the one mentioned here), and one mentioning MLC-Chips, for about 50 $ more?

So, could you also provide why I should go for any particular one? I'm also more into reliability than speed.

Thanks again, guys!

As I'll probably mainly use Linux, and install some larger programs (~2 GB) on this partition, will 40 GB for the linux partition and 60 GB for W7 be sufficient? I'd leave 28 GB unpartitioned.

Thanks!

Could anyone tell me what's the difference between

Samsung MZ-7PC0128D/EU (Retail, 830series, SATA 600, MLC-Chips)

and

Samsung MZ-7PC128B/WW (Light-Retail, 830 Basic)

?
The first is about 50$ more expensive.

thanks

Based on the words there the second one is the same drive, but it is only the drive. The first one will have the CD and maybe some other extras with it as well.
