I've been out of the loop for a while and I don't know what the "in" components are now. Basically my friend is looking to spend a total of 1200 or less on the tower, moniter and OS. He only lightly games and is just using it for university. So nothing fancy just needs to last a while.

If you don't need anything fancy get a stock computer. I got this computer at the Black Friday sale. AMD Athlon 64x2 5200+ @ 2.6GHz, 320GB HDD, 2GB DDR2 5300, DVD/CD/Lightscribe drive for $450. It came with a free 17" monitor and printer. I added a PSU for $50, an 8600GT for $100, case fans and cold cathodes for $30, and 1GB of RAM for $30. I might upgrade and get an 8800GT, minus the sell price of the 8600GT, I could get it for $100. Maybe 4GB of 6400 RAM for $60. Maxing out my whole system would be around $800 but that's because I replaced almost everything in it.

Does your friend want a mouse + keyboard, speakers or anything else???

Or just the tower, monitor + OS.

In a min, i'll post a build for that and we can add others in, "if" he wants them.

If you build you get better parts :p

True. But he said he doesn't need anything fancy. Best to go with a stock computer. Saves tons of money especially considering the OS.
