128 or 256?

Depends on the card. Generally speaking you'll want 256MB of course but it also depends on the price jump :) Some cards like the 92x0/5200/9500/9600/5500/5600/5700 dont benifit worth crap from the extra 128MB (especially for the price premium)

yeah a friend of mine is stuck on the idea that video RAM is all that matters, he will even go to the point where he describes his video card just by the ammount of RAM on it......he's like "yours is a 128 so therefore my 256 could own it".... ironic thing is, he was talking to my friend who has a 6600gt and he has a generic ATI card with 256 RAM on it to make it of some value......

*Summary*

!RAM ISNT EVERYTHING!

:P

werd, im just saying that people should look to core speeds or memory speeds before they judge a card by its VRAM

Yes but core and memory speeds dont mean all that much either ... otherwise that would make the 6600GT a superior card to the 6800GT...

128MB RAM is enough for normal use. Higher MB RAM just have a better performance in the high resolution.

so whats the benefit of having a 256bit memory instead of 128bit? it seems there is a pretty hefty price difference between the two identical card - wise.

Uh ... and extra 128bits? (which naturally means twice the xfer speed for similar clocks)
