128 to 512 video card what difference?

:confused: I don't play games but my son does. I just built a new system and went from a Nevida based 128 meg video card to a 512 meg card. So what difference will there be as far as games go?
 
Well more memory is a good thing but it depends on what the 128mb. card was and what the 512mb. card is.
 
Depends on video games. for example if the game is textured with high res such as 2650x2900 size having higher Vram will take advantage of it same with CAD
 
yes the ram, although still having alot to do with it, isnt as important as the chipset itself.
i remember the first graphics card i bought was a nvida 6500
i thought it was awesome because it had 512mb ram. had no idea it was actually really slow though haha, thought only that number mattered :D
 
Much depends on the actual GPU itself, and also the memory type, not just the amount. I would, however, assume that the performance increases a fair bit as 128MB is fairly low by today's standards;AFAIK all recent NVIDIA cards come with at least 256MB, apart from the very low end, which would mean that the 128MB card was either pretty old or really crappy. The high-end and most mainstream cards usually come with 512MB, and the new card probably falls to either of those categories.
 
Well if it was 128MB, we can probably all say it's around a GeForce 5 or 6.

512MB? It's not all about memory size. There are other things that also "cheat" you in this subject. Like Hypermemory or TurboCache.
 
The 512MB may in fact not be better. For instance, if he has a 128MB 6600GT, that would be better then say a 512MB 7300.

you said 512 may not be better. then said 128 would not be better then 512.

The higher the VRAM, the better it will perform on higher resolutions but as many people have said, it really depends on what card you're talking about.
 
NVIDIA GeForce 8

The video is a on board type, the NVIDIA GeForce 8 780 SLI series but I do not know what to compare it to.
 
I can't believe you are using a 3way sli board and still using onboard graphics....anybody see anything wrong with that picture???:eek:
