12GB ram 9.99 useable...

That is the message in my computer --> properties. A few weeks ago I had a bad DIMM so it was replaced under warranty with a part that is 'of equal or greater quality' the other 5 are a different brand in other words. If I just open my computer it shows 12gb so its reading all but it wont run on the 6th I guess. I noticed because my memory meter was 'high' for what I'm used to so I thought maybe it was bad. Whats the deal? What do I have to do to fix it. I'm sure I can run two different brands or why would tech support have done it. I even called and asked about the fact that they were different and they guy said it was fine. Help me out please I'm very annoyed.

They should have replaced the stick with one exactly the same. When i sent my corsair stick for replacement, i got an identical corsair stick back.

I'd complain to a supervisor or something, it sounds like they cheaped out on you.

what model and brand did you have before? I find it hard to believe any DDR3 line would be discontinued already.

Well.... I had some BSOD so they just replaced ALL my ram back in april. Then I got the new stuff. It had one bad that I sent back and it is: Wintec Industries AMPX.
The odd one out is ADATA. The AMPX is not even what was original. When they replaced it the first time I got it.

Sounds like you may not have memory remapping enabled in the BIOS. Did you ever have all 12GB show up as 'usable'?

Not on this MB. I have tested all DIMMs they all work. This MB is new to me. I don't even know what mem remapping is... Also I just talked to tech support at asus and they said to set the voltage and timing as per manufacturer specs but I cant find them

I swear only my BIOS has it lol. I've seen other people complaining about similar issues with 64 bit OSes and not having a setting to enable it.

I don't think it's a voltage/timing issue, the SPD should be set to 'safe' values. Plus that usually shows up in different forms, like system instability.

Thanks I did however get the timing set and no joy. Now they are telling me to remove and re-seat the CPU, if that doesn't work, new MB if that's no good new CPU. That doesn't make sense to me but I don't know that much about it I guess. Is it possible for the CPU not being seated properly to say 12gb 9.99gb useable. Its only with 6 dimms I think that is BS but again I don't know anything... Please help I'm calling back tomorrow after taking the CPU out which I don't want to do by the way.

Thanks again, Jeremy

Have you tested each slot individually on the motherboard? You may have a bad DIMM slot, take one DIMM and test it in each slot.

Also, the CPU has an on die memory controller, so memory issues can arise from a cpu that needs reseated.

I'll redo each dimm to be sure that I got them all. Thats wild to hear about the CPU. How tho is it able to run and all but not use the last 2gb of ram? Just for safety sake since I'm taking it back apart. How thick should my thermal paste be? I did a thin layer on both the waterblock and cpu as per instructions but I don't want too much. Also proper way to retighten the cooler. How tight its hard to tell with a screwdriver how tight it really is...

For the thermal paste your only supposed to but a little dot in the middle of the CPU. When you put the fan on it'll spread the rest of the thermal around. And about the cooler I have no idea hopefully bomberboysk can help you.
