My current laptop has 1680 x 1050 max resolution.
I like everything small, giving me lots of room to look at stuff.
Will there be a noticeable/bothersome difference between that and what most new laptops seem to be today (1366 x 768)?

Different Resolution gives different views. but being at higher resolution is advantageous. u can adjust to lower resolutions if you want to.

My laptop has a max res of 1280x768 and I don't use it much different from my 1920x1200 desktop screen, yeah there is more screen space but I often don't have any more than 2 active windows at a time on either. Two web pages fit nicely side-by-side on on my laptop display so I would assume if you are comfortable using 1680x1050, a small step down won't be all that bad unless you need to use your laptop for video/photo editing, screen space is important for stuff like that.

Apart from the different aspect ratios (1680x1050 is 16:10 whereas 1366x768 is 16:9 - could cause some distortion?). The only issue is the fact the image will be much less sharp.
