Right, im pricing up a new system build for a mate as mentioned in a different thread. I have come to the time of choosing hard drives, he wants at least 200Gb so i figured 250Gb would do fine. Then i remebered the problems that windows XP has with drives over 160Gb (only shows as 137Gb). So what im wondering is..... Is it ok to buy 2 x 120Gb HDD's. This way windows will be able to see the full capacity of both drives and have a total of 240Gb!!

What im asking is, wil this solution work or will windows still only detect half of the drive space?? It will be quite a big expenditure and i dont really want to risk it not working like i want it to.

Thanks in advance for any replies you give. :)

Ok, so what happens if i have an XP pro install CD and i install it without any service packs. Will it will load fine but only show 137Gb or will it throw up errors and die before installing, and another thing if i install sp1 (or 2) after win xp is installed, will i automatically be able to see the full 250Gb or do i have to do something extra to it.

See HDD101, mentioned this in there. To get the full size you need two things
1. 48bit LBA (if you dont have this, get a controller)
2. SP1 for WindowsXP

I read through HDD101 but didnt see anything on 48bit LBA. Can you tell me if it is possible to connect 2 x 120Gb hard drives and be able to see the full 240Gb in windows with NO service packs installed.

Also, does having ATA133 mean that i have 48bit LBA

Can you just tell me whether i would be able to connect 2 x 120Gb drives without a problem? I do not want to install any service packs and do not want to buy a controller card.
