I plan to OC to 4ghz

I got a slower cheep hard drive because at the moment I cant justify spending 3 or 4 hundred dollars on something I will eventually replace when the price of larger sata iii ssd's comes down.

I know 4gb of ram is on the low side but again in the future (like a few months) I will buy one or two of the same kits and jump to 8 or 12gb of ram.

My question is will the speed of the ram stay the same? I have not seen many kits with 8 or 12 gb of ram running at 2000mhz with a latency of 6...

The ram I chose I quite fast at 2200mhz but I want to de-clock it to 2000mhz to get a latency of 6 (its cheaper to de-clock than it is to buy the ram I want)

As for a case I have an older full tower that I am using.

Any tips or changes to my list of parts?


Basically what would you buy with 1500 dollars if you had to get all new parts.

On an X58 build your gonna want triple channel memory, anything above 1600mhz is a complete waste as you won't notice the difference. If you think you are gonna tighten the timings to cas6 on 7-10-10-28-2N@2200mhz memory, not really any other way to put it but thats crazy, as the PI series clocks well, but doesnt like tightened timings. Also, 2000mhz memory would put alot of strain on the integrated memory controller of the processor.

I just bought the GA board, but had this one, the Asus, in my cart until the UD3r happened to be on sale last week. I'm curious what I'm missing out on for not having gone with the Asus after all?

16+2 phase PWM, triple GPU support, better pcie layout, and overall just a better board.

I think I've also seen comments that the USB 3.0 won't work on the GA board if it's crossfired, though obviously I don't know first hand if that's true. My thought on the less expensive board was that it made it easier to go with the more expensive card (5870) and eliminate the want for crossfiring in the first place. Hopefully not wanting to crossfire will keep the downsides you mention from having as much impact.

Thank You for sharing your knowledge. You probably saved me a couple hundred between my original build list and what I ended up buying.
