$1500 Gaming/College Laptop?

College is comming up soon, and I'm probably gonna be pretty bored so I need a laptop that can play todays games and beyond. I was thinking about 160gb HDD, 256mb video card(I heard a lot of good things about pci cars), 1 gig of ram, I would really like a 3.0ghz 64-bit cpu, not don't really care about the sound card.

Can anyone point me in the right way?

do you really need a laptop? i mean seriously, i bought one and i don't even take it to college... i'm saving up to build a good desktop...

and by the way, most clock speeds for laptops don't get that high... not in that price range anyways, and then you start getting into desktop processors, which kill battery life...

Well I just want one to write papers, and play some new age video games. Cause it's gonna be boring as hell up there!

well i mean, do you really NEED a laptop? or do you just WANT one?

cause honestly you can't easily upgrade them and desktops are so cheap right now... especially if you build one yourself...

if you just want one, i recommend a Dell E1505... they are, in my opinion, good enough to handle today's games...

Well what would you guys suggest for a good gaming laptop? I'm not that impressed with that 15.4'' screen though.

Hell I might just buy a desktop and leave it up there, it might be cheaper..

well how big or small do you want it?

I would like a bigger monitor, but check these specs which I'm pretty happy with.

Is that video card any good?

Getting a desktop would be much better for gaming, as with $1500 you can get a very nice setup. You can look into small portable cases if space is an issue. The Aspire Q-pack seems very nice, and looks pretty good too.

The monitor's the only thing that'll cost you much. You can get mouse/keyboard for dirt cheap. Plus, gaming on a laptop isn't that great either.

Ya I know, but I kinda what a laptop so when I do go home I can just pick up my laptop and hit the road.

Instead of trying to put my papers on a cd and then taking them home.

I mean the computer i'm on now has lasted me a couple of years and it's specs weren't even that great when I got it. I think a top of the line laptop now can last me thru college.

the laptop you built looks pretty solid GodTom... and the video card is pretty good but don't be fooled... i think it only has 128MB's of built in memory... it'll "steal" spare RAM or space on the HDD to fill the other 128MB's...

Well I can always change the video card right?

Also I'm worried about only have a 2.0ghz processor, I mean I have a p4 2.0ghz now and its not even cutting it.

But a 1.5k laptop is not anywhere near top of the line. My uncle's laptop has that video card, isn't that great.

Core duo 2.0ghz processor is a world apart from P4 2.0ghz. You can't compare clock speeds in different groups of processors.

not in a laptop... well, theoretically you could, but unless you are a professional with engineering degrees etc. it just isn't a possiblity...

and for you worries, there has been many advances in the CPU's that computer has... it's dual core, optimized for battery life and i believe it uses a different stepping architecture than your P4... it will outperform your P4 mostly because that it's dual core though...

If you want to play games, and have a 512MB video card, you're simply going to be looking at a desktop. Unless you're willing to spend alot more.
