$1600 for a video card!!!

I've seen those cards on newegg before.. and i don't get it. Why so expensive?

From the reviews it looks like they are for CAD and what not. I guess if you are making a few 100k a year off of it as a career its worth it. I just cant justify spending more than a few hundred on ANY computer part, let alone a few grand. Then again I bet alot of people wouldnt spend $2500 on a few parts for their cars either, so to each their own I guess

THEY ARE FOR CAD!!! My god, can't you see that? Is processors is the equivalent of a FX 5500 GPU.
HENCE THE "FX5500"!!! LOL I'm sorry, it just seams so obvious!

Those are workstation cards, not gaming cards. They are not meant for gaming, and even some 7xxx series can outperform it in games.

Anyways.................can anyone else give a better more indepth reason for the difference?

a bit,.. yes. If you try moving a picture on a 7900GTX for example. I mean, a really big pic, with about 50 layers and a resolution of 5000x3000 (wich is still rather small),. the 7900GTX will lag like hell, and sure wond be nice to work with, and that is what these cards are designed for.

I believe the difference is that these are better at doing really big operations one at a time, while gaming cards are good at doing lots of smaller operations very quickly.

It's like comparing a tractor to a car. Tractors can cost millions of dollars, but a car that costs a hundred thousand dollars is much faster. The difference is that the tractor is used to do work and therefor justifies it's price.

Those Quadros go way past $1,600 per card. Iv seen some on newegg before for $4,000 per card with dual GPUs on it and 640mb of memory.

Pros: Great card for workstation and 3d Studio Max

Cons: Screen freezes up when unit over heats. Not a good card for gaming!

Other Thoughts: Make sure you have plenty of ventilation in your case.

Usually the cards have four GPUs, hence the name Quadro. Therefore it is like having a quad SLI made for uber photoshop and movie making.

I see.. well that does explain the price i guess. They're still expensive as hell though.. does anyone here own a card of this caliber?

most people on CF use gaming or family type computers not high-end workstations, although they might use one at there job/work place

How many times do i have to tell you that the FX5500 is NOT the same as the Geforce FX 5500. That card I believe uses a G71 core, which is what the 7900gt/x uses. The Geforce FX 5500 uses the NV34B core.
