1GB vs. 2x512MB

The first link is 1GB, the 2nd is 2x 512MB. Why is the 1GB cheaper?

And also, usually the 1GB would be more expensive. If there is only a few dollars difference, is there any point in getting the 2x512MB, other than like $5.

Well, if your motherboard supports Dual-Channel, you'd better go with the 2 X 256MB (second link), check your mobo specs to find if it is dual-channel capable...

Other than that there is no curcial difference, the 2 x 512MB is more expensive probably because it is actually, physically TWO items...

The 2x512MB would be the best choice if you plan with only buying 1GB of RAM for now, because then you can utilize dual-channel mode if your mobo supports it.

Thats the motherboard Im getting. I think I should get the 1GB for upgrading later, because It only has 2 slots, so If I plan to upgrade later, it would mean I have to throw out one of the 512MB sticks. Its only Single-channel.

Although Im not set on that board yet. But i still think 1GB be better for me.

Since thats the case, I would go with the single 1GB stick.

Just a side note, I've had issues and other people have had the same issues when trying to run 2 x 512 dual channel ram. It had some bad stability issues. I haven't been able to find much about the issue, but when both sticks of RAM are used in single channel, it doesn't create any problems. So I don't know whether its a mobo problem or an XP problem.

dual channel doesnt yield very much performance difference...

for gaming really it doesnt.
