im looking for some help...

I asked my friends who have some experience in computer builds, and learned what i could. now i have a parts list, and have a similar questions to some other threads i've seen on here. You guys seem pretty helpful and active, so i assume its the place to ask.

I'm asking for help, basically if you spot anythign that could be cheaper or better and not too expensive, or if some parts there will not work too well together, id appreciate if you pointed it out, this is my first look into building a PC, and without my friend here its all what i can work out.

i have £300-£400 so about $800 or just less, and have come up with this part list. I'm aware it doesnt include screen, mouse, keyboard and CD/DVD rom drive, but i think i covered most things.

yeah, so comments on anythign you see wrong.

If your in the UK, your not going to be able to order from newegg.com, as they ship only to china, canada, and the united states,so you would prolly need to use overclockers or ebuyer. Might want to think about going with an amd rig at this pricepoint, as socket 775 is essentially end of life. What kind of power supply are you going to run? Please dont say the one in that case, as its a piece of crap.

really? i didnt know that about newegg, bummer.

still partswise thats just a way of showing what im looking at, i havn't shopped around.
i know not to get a cheap power supply, thats the first thign i was told, but i dont really know what im looking for in one? just one thats recommended is all i can go by...any recommendations then?

Depending on price, the OCZ Stealthxstream/ModXStream power supplies are good for the price, overclockers had a modxstream 600W on sale last time i looked. Also good power supplies are corsair, antec earthwatts, pc power&cooling, it really all depends on how much you can put towards a power supply.

well overall as i said im looking at under £400 so i have near £120 to spend on case and PSU

edit: yeah theres a ModXStream pro 600w there for £65

theres a 600w aswell, for the same price, so i might aswell go for the 700w.

and as for the rest of the system, you suggested AMD? would it be around the same price, and performance wise? im not exactly picky, ill go for the most power i can get for my money obviously.

Yes, because in the future say, you want to upgrade. With AMD you have backward compatibility of am2+ running am3 cpu's, while with intel what you see is what you get. Socket 775 is no more, the current cpu's out are all that will be out. Kinda like investing money in a bankrupt company lol.

is this the i7 thing? i looked at i7 CPU's but they all seem to jump up in price, obviously cos they have the new technology, but alot more than i can affod. i'll have a look for AMD parts instead.

i7 basically replaced 775, well, i7 and then the upcoming i5.

so instead of the intel parts:

AMD Phenom II and AMD 790G chipset are what ive been suggested, and then apparently 4gig of RAM should be enough.

am i right in thinking thats all i have to change?

Just remember the following:

AM3 cpu will work in am2+ or am3 mobo
AM2+ cpu will not work in am3 mobo
AM3 Motherboards are ddr3

In your price range i would look at am2+ mobos and ddr2 memory, such as this mobo:

Also, go with the ati card you were thinking about, as these boards are crossfire capable so an ati card could be to your benefit in the future.
