1x 1GB VS 2X512MB

hey, my brother uses an old dell dimension 8400, currently with 512mb of ram (2x256). the motherboard recently fried so i bought another one off of ebay and replaced that. my parents also said i could buy some ram at the same time. but im kinda stuck.

is it better to use 2x512mb (dual channel or whatever) ? or 1x1GB ?

Unless the motherboard only has two slots and you feel like you'll be upgrading in the very near future, go ahead and get dual channel.
