2.5in HDD problem

I need to replace a hard drive in a HP laptop. I went to put one HP drive out of another laptop into the troubled laptop only to find that even though both units are HP, the IDE connectors are totally different. So how do I go about buying one online and being sure Im getting one with the right connector?? I know my laptop has an adaptor between the port and the HDD itself.

Assuming you're 100% it's IDE and not SATA, might it simply have a converter on the drive? Many have little converts that make popping the drives in an out much easier.
