2 Monitors

OK Here is my situation (excuse me if a little long winded)

At my fire department I initiated the use of a web page based availability system...basically a single web page showing info on each station in the department via a database

I want to have the page viewable at all times in the hallway of my fire station so my plan was to get a spare computer place it in a closet and runt he video cable through the wall where the monitor will be mounted so everyone can see the info as they walk by.

My chief would rather not utilize a computer just for that (even though it is old and sitting in the closet collecting dust)

He states he would rather tie the monito into a currrent computer (so basically split the video signal) and have the computer mounted on the wall in that room.

I told him I was not sure fi that could be done.

So here are my questions....

Can it be done in a way that the computer splitting the audio signal could still be used and continuously show the web page on the added monitor?

If it can be done, what would I need to accomplish it (other than the extra monitor)

Regardless if it can be done or not, what is the longest distance a monitor can be away from the PC? I wasnt sure if the signal broke down or not with a long video cable and I wasnt even actually sure how long of a cable I could get or if connectors are acceptible.

Thanks IN advance

Ron

Currently in that configuration at work.

You must have a video Adapter capable of Dual Display(most are). Look in your display settings and at your video card's manual. I run a separate display for personnel and surf www.computerforum.com on the other @ the same time!

Once You ID everything, load the screen you want to display on the primary Monitor and drag it to the secondary Monitor, freeing up the Primary for other uses.

Good Luck!;)

Thanks for the input.... one other question. What happens if the 2 monitors are different sizes? One is a widescreen using 1680 x 1050 and one is more of a square monitor that would need a resolution of 1024 x 768

I'm not in front of my dual display computer but I believe there are like two or three choices.

- Clone / Mirror
- Extended Windows to next Monitor
- Separate?

The "Settings" tab should show 2 blue rectangles representing monitors.
Highlight one and move the "Resolution" slider below it.

Actually I just checked the computer where I want to set this up at.... The computer is fairly new and has 2 outputs for video. The output currently in use is the newer type of connection with the pin holes and a spade piece of metal (sorry dont know the name for it)

the one not in use is the traditional 15 pin VGA connection.... I assume I could just attach the second monitor to the connection not in use?

OK i just set it up and ran into one small problem. Both screen are working. The added screen (set to the left) has nothing on it other than desktop background. So I opened up the web page that I want constantly viewed on the main monitor and I dragged it over to the secondary monitor where I want it up all of the time.

The problem is there is still a tab at the bottom of the main screen for the internet explorer that I know people will accidentaly click on and close the viewer int he other window. Also, if someone opens up Internet Explorer in the main window, it is changing the screen on the other one.

Is there any way that I can have the Internet Explorer page set to be opened in the secodnary monitor and stay there open unless someone moves the cursor to that monitor and physically closes it?
