2 or 3 GB?

Ok I'm upgrading one of my PC's which currently has 2 slots and it has vista HP as the OS. I was wondering if 3GB really made alot of difference to 2GB...
I was just gonna get 2 x 1GB cards. What do you think?

2 is a little skimpy, 3 is ok, 4 is better only if you have a 64-bit vista though. Whats the motherboard you have?

If your mobo supports 4gb max and you have 2 slots , and you have a 32-bit O/S then i'd say 3gb is ideal, that's what i'm going to do. Having an extra 1gb of ram to throw around always helps in games, multitasking and the like.

Are you using Dual Channel DDR? You should be able to tell because Dual Channel slots are blue(you have three so the third should be black). If you are using Dual Channel DDR SDRAM then you 2 is better than three. I am not sure on exactly how it works but apparently Dual Channel will run faster than 3 sticks of ram. As soon as you put the third stick in, it will turn the Dual Channel feature off and wont even tell you.

Put it this way: when you have 2gb it is shared between all programs and windows itself. When you have 3gb, 1gb is reserved for windows and you have a full 2gb to run applications/games. More is always better, unless you have dual channel memory as SteveThePirate said. Also, tell us if you are using DDR, DDR2 or DDR3.
