2 video cards NOT in SLI

I have read somewhere on these boards that you can use SLI/Crossfire mobo and have 2 GPUs in which are of different make and use them in order to plug more monitors to your computer, but that the GPUs won't be SLied or Crossfired.

Have I gotten this correctly or not ?

I know there are GPUs to which you can connect 2 monitors, just wondering about having more.

If that is possible, what are the limitations, the system would run on the most efficient card ? would the resolution be worst if you had an older card as a 2nd one ?

You can set reolutions for each card independently. You can have as many cars as you can fit in your computer.
 
Well, I think you're limited to 32 monitors...but yeah, I suspect you'll run out of places to put the cards before you hit that limit ;) Though also realize I have seen some cards(particularly older ones) that don't work too well with others. If they're using older drivers or something, it may not support multi monitors. I suspect you'll be using fairly new cards, but I figure that should be mentioned...
 
they would have to be all wall mounted and use extension cables because the rest would not have long enough cables to get to the case.
 
I believe that is correct, you can run two different video cards in each PCI-E x16 slot, but if one is a high end card and one is a low end card, you may have issues when it comes to gaming, such as it utilizing the low end card as the main card.
 
Cool, thanks for the info... I was not planning on doing that just yet, but it sort of gives a different perspective to a SLI mobo which wouldn't be used in SLI...
