Hi there,
I have an ATI Radeon 9800 pro 128 MB graphics card in my system. I am planning to buy a 20-inch widescreen lcd monitor. I just wanted to know if i will be able to get a decent performance at 1680x1050 resolution (in games and non-gaming use)? or do i have to upgrade my graphics card also. Also. there is one more question... i am getting a dell 2007wfp monitor and an acer ferrari f-20 monitor at almost same price. so which one should i go for? I want to go for dell but i have heard about the banding issues in 2007wfp. has it been resolved in recent versions of this monitor? Please help.
Thank you for your time.

If you could give us links to the 2 monitors then we can tell you which one is better. The 9800 should be fine displaying that resolution, but I'm not sure how it will do with games. What games are you going to be playing? Also, what else do you have in your computer? Processor? How much RAM? What kind of HDD? etc.

I dont know much about monitor pricing, but running a 9800 should be fine at that rez. They only time you are going to notice performance loss is in games.

Thanks guys for your replies

The links to the two monitors are:
Dell: http://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=CADHS1&sku=320-4688
Acer: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1776108&Sku=A179-2000 CA

The games that I would be playing are Wolfenstein:Enemy-territory, Need for speed: most wanted, Prince of persia:warrior within, etc.
My PC specs are:
P4 3.0 GHz HT
1024 MB Dual Channel 400 MHz RAM
Western Digital Raptor 40 GB 10000 rpm Hard Disk
Mobo: P4P800 E Deluxe

Also, please tell me about the banding issues in Dell monitor.

In most wanted, you'll definitely have to play at low settings. Not sure about the others. I'm not sure if it'll be lag-free at that resolution with minimum settings.

I think the games will be fine(what settings you play the games at will change your performance though). I'd go with the Acer because they actually tell you what the response time is. 8ms is really good and I won't be surprised if the Dell's response time is around 24ms.

1680x1050?

You'll need a a better card. Not only for games such as Most Wanted, but also for newer games that I'm sure you'll want to run within some time.

The 9800Pro was a real killer in its time no doubt, but that was a long time ago.

The viewsonic VX2025wm seems to be a nice monitor but i have read that it has scaling issues when you want to run lower resolutions on it. So if my graphics card doesn't perform well at 1680x1050 in games then i'll probably have to run at lower resolutions. Won't it be a problem then?... other than this the VX2025wm is good.

it'll do fine... depending on the game. im not sure how well games support widescreen... guess you'll have to see depending on the game.
i'd upgrade the card though.

LCD's must be run at their native resolution if you want the image quality and/or picture size you pay for. Thus, you'll need a powerful enough card to handle your games at the native resolution of the LCD.

Like I said, with such money into a nice LCD you'll want/need a better videocard to play newer games.

im running a radeon 9550 on my dell 2005fp 20", native resolution is 1600X1200 and in non game play its just fine.

Have played Oblivion and NFSMW on this, albeit in low settings and its seemed quite happy with it

Heh, my 9700PRO cant play oblivion on low settings just fine. I get 20FPS with the rez at 1024X768 with everything on low, and 5FPS in fights.
