20 pin in 24pin motherboard

Well with my old psu it just had a 20 pin motherboard connector hooked to the 24pin motherboard and it was fine. I plugged my new psu in the same way and haven't noticed a difference. Just today I put the +4 pin in so it filled it up like supposed to but I haven't had any problems. What is the difference between the 2?

The extra 4 pins provide more to the motherboard for power hungry CPUs and grpahics cards. It may or may not matter in your situation.
