200 gig Western Digital IDE drive being pretty strange...

i have the whole thing nearly full... i have 6 gigs left.

but thats not the problem.

I had it for about a year, worked perfectly, but recently... when i send a large folder, or large number of files, the first few seconds will go smoothly. After a second or two, the green completion bar will stop moving. My computer will start to hang. The usual stuff, when i move my mouse, itll appear a couple inches away, windows take forever to load. Then the files will quickly start to transfer again. Then itll hang... Until all the files are done. That was becoming a problem in itself.

But #2? wow, this is strange. I have music, small movie clips, and lots of pictures on this drive. I was looking thru my massive personal photo folders, and realized, holy crap, some dont show up in preview. Ill have 35 nice thumbnails, and then occaisonally one or 2 or 3 will just be the standard windows image icon. when i click it, it has no preview, and when i drag it into photoshop, it still didnt load. Photoshop told me that the JPEG code was wrong, so i downloaded a program to check it out.

I downloaded WinHex so i could see the Hex data of the files themselves. When i drag a normal picture into winhex, i see the usual image header, with camera metadata, and such.

when i drag one of those error'd files? i get code like this (cut and pasted from the beginning of the string):

errorfile.jpg

for those who dont know, that is not what image Hex data looks like. or even starts out. Ive opened a few of the weird files, and none of them had the correct headers. From what it looks like to me, all the files are somethin like a RAM dump, and just random text/data (sometimes, even error messages from windows).

Any clue what can cause this? my data is obviously gone, maybe i can find it on my backup drive. But how can i stop this from happening again? and why is it slowing down/hanging?

Im on the edge of buyin another 300 or 400 gig drive, so if thats all you guys can think of, throw it out there.

Winxp Home + SP2
AMD Athlon 64 3500+

did u try scandisk and defrag? that probably maybe cause by a virus or you're trying to access a part of the drive with bad sectors.

ah yeah, forget to mention that.

I acnt defrag, cuz its too full. It recommends 15% of the drive free to defrag. Windows tells me it doesnt need it anyway. Even looking at the analyzation picture, the whole drives blue.

But i tried scandisk too, and itll get all the way to the end of phase 2, and just say "Windows was unable to complete the disk check"

I'll run it to "automatically fix errors" but thatll require a reboot. brb. lol

edit:

The blue sectoin of defrag extends alll the way to the right, signaling the end of the disk. I can see this as a minor problem, maybe for the hanging, but not the files. Ill have to see what i can delete/move to defrag it quick.

cuz the drive might be using some files so it needs to reboot, if it is ur boot drive u need to run in at startup anyway. check both scan for error and attempt recover sectors.

Hmm

Sounds to me like bad sectors on the HD or data corruption for some other reason. It could be that you are starting to lose your HDD so I would backup like crazy.

JAN :D

Problem # 1 - First guess... running low on virtual memory? It appears that you're running out of space on a huge HD. If that's your primary drive, then you may be cutting into your VM. 2nd guess... Bad sectors on your drive, which may be causing problem # 2. Something corrupted those files somehow whether it is a bad HD or virus of some sort. I do recall a while back something about a virus that was somehow attached to jpegs or gifs.

Just stop downloading all of the porn and pirated music from those shady places and you won't get as many people installing trojans, spyware, and viruses on your pc to screw it up. j/k

nah, its not my primary drive, just a storage drive.

I ran dickcheck, and after about 10 hours, it finished its processes at boot. I see no difference, and dont even know if it even did anything. :(

And i dont download anything from shady places, so i doubt its a virus of some sort, but im gonna run a check with some updated lists and see if i come up clean.

Edit: No known viruses...
