2048 or 4096 RAM in Vista HP... Need a techie's help

 If you look at my following system, do you think it'll seriously boost performance if I go from 2048MB to 4096MB RAM? Reason being is because Gateway screwed up my order to begin with and gave me a $50 credit. I'm trying to rationalize whether I should boost my memory to 4096MB for only $150. Just not sure that if running Vista Home Premium... if that double in RAM will make any noticeable difference. More is always better but wondered if it'll help gaming at all or not. Leaving it to techies to give me a general idea on whether it's worth it.

I don't think that 4GB of RAM is needed at the moment, 2GB is enough for gaming today! Really, don't think it's worth it.

That's what I pretty much figured. I was guessing that I won't need that much power for some time yet. Maybe when Halo 4 or 5 came out...

Yeah, not for now anyay, is there anything else you need for your computer? You could save it, it's allways good to have some money saved away :P

2GB should be more than enough. If I'm not mistaken, you can't even utilize more than 2GB unless you're running a 64bit OS. Besides, RAM doesn't speed your computer up, unless your are running very low and using the paging file too much...

It's between 2 and about 3.25GB that's usable, it depends on the system. However I don't think 32bit vista suffers from this.

Well, to counter-reply to the last comment. My dad has the same system as my old one. 512MB vs 1.75GB RAM on my last system both running P4s and mine was NOTICEABLY faster. That's where I gained the idealism that more memory really helped. But as systems get as fast as they are today... seems to me like a car getting 15MPG in 1985 to 15MPG in 2007 with a half-sized engine getting more horsepower.

Yeap, 3.25gb on the 32bit, just like XP. Vista 64bit Basic is 8gbs, 64bit Premium is 16gbs and 64bit Ultimate 128gbs

if you want to spend you money you could try buying a physics card. Sort of a sidekick for your videocard.
Or hire someone to overclock your cpu for you :P
or buy some new quiet fans
or get a hd cooler like the ibl hdd box (cooling and quieting :P)
or get a new quiet cpu cooler
or get a 10.000rpm hard disk to run your games from (loading will be faster)
or a creative x-fi xtreme gamer edition soundcard (will improve your sound quality some)

more then enough options i guess :P
i still want to buy pretty much everything above

ROFL ahaha, never but never ever buy an stupid physics graphic card cuz they aren't worth the money and they don't have a use in most game you would be wasting money for nothing.

The cpu cooler might be a good option also the quiet fans if the ones from gateway are too loud

2GB is more then enough, I doubt you would notice any difference if you bought 4GB... well, you would notice that your wallet is a bit lighter :P

i never said it was a good choice :P
but if you really want the ultimate gaming machine it's an option (i still wouldn't buy it if i want the ultimate gaming machine)

anyways you could always save it up

4GB is overkill, the recommended RAM for Photoshop to run smoothly is 1GB and i cant really see any more arduous tasks that would warrant that kind of memory, unless you were running games, photoshop and a virus scan or something similar

i wouldnt want to buy a 8800GTX ever! its 2 expensive... and anyways i dont play WoW Halo FEAR or anything of that sort
