2GB Memory?

You could probably get away with using 1GB RAM as most high-end games still only need 512MB but 2GB would be worthy investment, but then again, so would 4GB :P

cpu is the most important factor, if you dont have good, its nothing to have 5 gb memory. kay?
Actually the bottleneck of modern systems is memory bandwidth not cpu processing capacity.

Do you want to open Internet Explorer in half a second or a third? worth $500?
Well high end gaming systems arent dedicated to opening Internet Explorer ;)

Indeed, the only really useful function of that much memory (in gaming) is to have things loaded in a RAMdrive ;)

There's really no benefits to having more than 1GB (at least not yet). I saw some info on it about a guy who did some testing using 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, and 2GB. There was no real gain going from 1 to 2GB, in some cases it only worsened.

Windows XP64 can support up to 128GB of storage....now that would give some performance boost. Imagine having your whole hdd in RAM, think of the blazing fast speeds. Ok, stop daydreaming. No, 2GB isn't gonna give you much of a boost.

Lolll

I think that everyone made it clear that 1GB is enough for now. You will be investing into something you will not need. It's all up to you. Afterall, I have a crazy friend with 4GB!!! He thinks that it gives him the extra edge....but it does not. Just stick with 1GB of high quality ram and you will be more than fine.

What about one and one half gigs? 2 x 512mb and 2 x 256mb? Would that cause my system to run awkward?

No, i have 2x512 and 1x256 for a total of 1.25GB doesnt make anything run akward, although i cant use dual-channel :( Oh well, still runs great.

It really depends on the games yer dealing with and what kinda fancy (software-side) setups you have (i.e., take a game like Baldur's Gate II ... and mount all the CDs on virtual ramdrives .... or try to). More than 1GB does have its uses but not anything really meaningful outside of real work

Depending on the setup (a) it can run dual channel and (b) it may not be able to run dual channel regardless

ok trizoy

Adding an extra gig of memory would not have an affect on the time it takes to open IE. And if it did you would not see a 17% increase. Since IE uses on average 11 mb of memory its loading speed would be determined by its ram timings not the amount of memory. Your hdd read speed would also play a large factor.
Maybe fooling around with it's clock and timing would be cheaper and more effective.
I would only recomend graabing that extra memory if you have many start up programs and many running processes. I like to keep the processes below 25. Please correct me if im wrong. :)

If you have a high-end computer, then getting 512 MB x 4 would be nice in a two dual channel setup to have 2 GB. The right motherboard makes a great difference. For future games and multimedia, it is a good investment.

Actually, getting 4 x 1GB would be better for future investment, but 512mx x 4 is good for a few years, seeing that games still recommend only 512mb now.

Are you adding ram, or are you about to build a system and wondering how much ram to get? I would think 1g of high quality ram would be much more effective than 2g of average ram. Get the lowest latency and highest speed you can. If you still have the comp in 5 years and you actually need 2 gigs, get it at that time.

I dont really know what im talking about but this makes sense to me at least.
