Should I be using 2gig or 4gig, ill be running vista ultimate as well as ubuntu.
Ill be using vmware and virtual pc 2007. as well as other everyday things like email internet.

i assume you are talking about RAM here?

well 4gig is the obvious choice, im not sure how vista would read 4gig, but i would go for 4gig of RAM...

If you have a 32 bit OS, then you will only see around 3.25GB of RAM, but that is still better then going with 2GB.

Did you really think anyone would say go with 2GB over 4GB? lol

If you are running vista 64 then you will notice a huge difference between 2GB and 4GB. With Vista 32, you will still notice the extra 2 GB, but it will not make a huge difference unless you are running big programs or games. I would personally recomend going with 4 GB's just to make sure you have it if you need it. You can buy it pretty cheap now a days so it is a very wise upgrade.

Why would you get 4 gigs, its so unnecessary. No OS, 32 or 64 bit Vista, would need 4 gigs of ram. Your better off going with 2 gigs.

No Im not. You would only need that much ram for some SEROUS video editing, or something of that nature. I doubt this guy does anything very memory consuming, so no its not really necessary for 4 gigs of ram. I mean if you want to spend the extra dollar and get it, go ahead but its just not necessary.

That was the case a few years ago, but now 2GB is really the minimum you want, and 4GB is becoming more of the standard for higher end machines. With prices being extremely cheap ($65 for 4GB of DDR2-800), theres no reason not to spend the money on 4GB.

If you have several applications open at once, then 4GB will definitely benefit you. Especially since Vista uses all the available RAM you have to off-load the paging file for files that are accessed often.

I will agree with you 100% on that. But again we dont know what this guys rig is capable of, and if in fact it is a high end machine. I have a high end machine and 2 gigs is just fine (but I am running XP).
