hey guys/gals, i jus purchased a 2nd hdd for my rig and was wondering, how can I transfer my programs and documents/pictures to it? if i transfer programs to the new drive will they still work properly? or do I have to re-install them all?

im partitioning the new hdd to 2 "D" and "E" and like the programs to be on the "D" drive and the documents/pictures to "E" drive.

thnx in advance

you can transfer your programs to another hd. or directory.
for example. winamp.
it's normally in c:\program files\winamp\files here..
you can move it to d:\
have it as D:\program files\winamp\files here
or d:\winamp\files here.
however you do it. once moved you have to change the properties of the shortcut to reflect the new directory and it will run as it always have.

i have done this from c:\ to G:\
and any further installs of programs i choose custom install and change the install from c:\program files to g:\program files

far as the documents, photos, music, etc.
just highlight the ones you want moved
go up top to EDIT from there you can choose.
copy to folder, move to folder and choose
E:\
E:\documents
E:\photos
etc..

hope that helps!!!

Some programs might work while some won't. I think the ones that modify the registry will have some trouble migrating drives.

2nd hard drive is for imaging

You don't want to run any programs from a 2nd HD. Your 2nd HD should have 2 partition, one small and one large. Image your C drive to the 2nd partition on the 2nd drive and that is where you will store your backup data. If your computer crashes, just install your image and your back in business in 15 minuters. When your computer crashes and you find out the HD crash also, just re-install your image to the first partition on your 2nd drive which is now your first drive and again your back up in 15 minutes.

i clicked on the program files to highlight it.
went up to EDIT choose copy to . or move to folder

so yeah basically copy /paste . if make a copy
choose move to folder if your gonna move it there permanently

also the capture. image your c:\ as stated in above posts is also a good idea.
if you wanna backup your info.

My advice to you is leave things alone as for as program go. You have two options here that will keep you a happy computer user and won't cause you pain, fustration and more importanly lost data.

1. Replace your existing drive with the new drive giving you more room. This is the option I recommend. Then you can use your "old" as a back up. So you have your data in two palces not one. Do you currently have your data back up? What would you lose if your system crashed and you couldn't access your HDD anymore?

2. Install the new drive as a secondary and more your My Documents folder (or where ever you keep your data at) to it. This will leave your OS and Programs on the old drive and your data to the new drive. Depending on the amount of your data that is music, videos, etc you can free up quite a bit of room on your C: drive. You still need to back your data somehow though to DVD or external drive maybe?

The problem with moving programs off the C: partition is some programs require the regestry to work. If they were installed on the C: partition you will need to uninstall them and reisntall them somewhere else for them to work properly. Frankley doing this creates a cluster $&% on any system. What happens if you have to reinstall? What happens in one of your drives crashs? Do you have back ups of your data if your system fails? System clean up utilites miss alot when things aren't installed on the C: drive.

I think you can copy data to 2nd HDD easily but the the installed programs that had something to do with windows registry would not work after copying to 2nd HDD

That's been my experience as well. Files - are no problem to move though. I think there are ways to move system files - but it's above my expertise.

It might effect the data processing speed of your system...otherwise there is no restriction on installing a second HDD with your system

This post is full of dmb.

I know right?

Quick question (i dont wanna make a whole thread) is it possible to get a 2nd hdd and somehow spread out the info in a RAID 0 configuration, even after all programs, etc... are on only one?
