2nd monitor not working, cause unknown

This morning my secondary monitor, which I have always used as an extended desktop, doesn't work. Windows had installed an automatic update and so I had to enter my password as usual. However, my 2nd (extended) monitor will not work and the icons on it has moved to the main monitor along with the icon already on it. I check extend and apply but the monitor still shows as "not active". Ideas? Thanks

I should had added, I restored the system to an earlier date without change in the problem. Also, if I unplug the monitor when reconnected it briefly comes on, the power light goes from yellow to green and the Dell icon appears, but only briefly.
 
No, johnb35, I have not. I can get a "Self Test Feature Check" box with the color bars moving around (as with a screen saver) when one of the buttons is pressed. I'll try to connect it to a laptop or switch the monitor connections at the computer later. I have health issues and tire quickly with minimal activity.
 
Other than that, I would say it has to be a driver issue. You may want to uninstall the video driver, reboot and then reinstall it.
 
The driver software is in add/remove programs. You will need to find the ati video driver software in there and uninstall it. Then download the latest driver for the card.
