3 Hard Drives - Programs/Data

I see a lot of people do this, or mention doing it at least. They say that they're going to get a 2 WD Rapter for the Operating System and Programs (They RAID it of course) and then they go and get a large regular SATA hard drive for they're data (music, video, downloads, etc.)

My question is, does this actually help? Does it make that big of a difference? Just curious if some people have done this and how it worked out for them.

I haven't done that but there are lots of people that say it is a lot faster even if benchmarking shows it isn't. A friend of mine had a RAID0 array and disk IO in his usage scenario was very fast.

Personally, I don't think RAID is necessary outside of a corporate (or government or other institutional environment).
