3 year old i7 vs 6th generation i7

It's been nearly 3 years I have my Toshiba laptop. I have an i7-36xx series processor with 12 gb ram.

I have put a 512gb SSD, which is the best upgrade I have. I am going to swap out the DVD for a internal 1tb HHD. I am quite happy with the arrangement.

But I am also tempted to get a faster processor (i7-68xx). More ram 16gb? And more than anything else, a dedicated G-Force Nividia 4GB graphic card (for my video editing).

Is the 6th generation i7 much faster than the 36xx?

Yes it is faster, and if you got the money.. I'd say..you only live once.

I'm contemplating buying myself a new laptop too, and those new 10-series GPUs are pretty awesome with the 6700 or 68xx

My current laptop is only like 10 months old..but I like new stuff..(kinda a problem..lol)

I'd just upgraded my internet to 60/30 mbps. I got better than that when I am plugged in. In a wifi at a distance, I still get 22/25.
I used to get 15/5.

That is fast.

Most of our activities are in the internet so the increase internet speed really matters. Except that when I edit video (my new found passion), it is taking up all the resources. I have a very good program that I cannot run because it requires a very good graphic card which I don't have.

Well, based on a few of your post and things you have maybe wanted to do/upgrade, if your budget allows it, why don't you just treat yourself to something new.

Are you set on a laptop, have you considered a tower, or are you certainly a laptop person?

As far as laptops go, there are some flipping awesome ones availble that would be a dynamite upgrade over current and allow you to enjoy your new found hobby.

That's probably going to cost him like 2 grand for a new laptop that is very capable to do video editing... lol

There is a HP for $899 that has 16gb, 1tb hhd, i7=6500, and nividia g-force 4gb graphic.

I can still get by with Adobe Premiere Pro which is not as resource hoard as Davinci Resolve.

10 years ago, I would agree with you. What's $2,000? But I am now on fixed income and I am a true believer of the Moore's law.

Because anything with the new 10-series nvidia gpu laptops start around the 2 grand mark.

Besides, the i7-6500u is only a dual core that is hyperthreaded. With video editing, you want moar cores and when possible more than 16gb of ram (preferably DDR4), a powerful gpu (in this case, the new 10-series cards from nvidia blows the doors off the predecessors), and a decent size SSD (of course, the bigger the better).

Bottom line, I said IF budget allows, and regardless, a laptop is NOT the way to go if you want a video editing machine... unless you go MAC, I'd imagine.. but then we cycle back to the budget issue!

I guess I will have to wait then. As much as I am into video editing, it is, after all, a hobby. Not a livelihood. Can justify $2000.
Also, as this is a new found passion, I'll need to allocate some fund for a new camera. My Nikon D800 is good, but I need an additional camera to move around. That means another few hundred dollars for a 3-axil gimbal.

I'd found the mobility with laptop and don't think I can go back to desktop.
