32/64 Bit Confusion?

Many of the programs that I use in media production trumpet the fact that they are now written to support 64bit processing.

I currently have a 32 bit processor and as a result, have been told that I can't recieve any of the benefits of my 64 bit capable applications.

I'm thinking of getting a new desktop that of course has a 64 bit and probably a dual core chip inside.

What concerns me is that I've heard that Operating Systems also come in 32 and 64 bit configurations. If I'm running a 32bit OS, does it matter to my 64 bit capable applications if I have a 64 bit processor?

Will the 32 Bit OS, by default, downgrade all of the computers processing to 32 Bits no matter what type of processor I have, or does the 32 Bit OS only limit the OS's performance to 32 bit?

if you ahve a 64 bit os and computer it will run 64 bit programs and visa versa with 32 os with hardware will only do 32 programs BUT if you have 64 bit comp and 32 bit os it will run programs in only 32
