32 bit, 64 bit, ??? bit

So they have 32 bit OS that can hold about 3GB RAM total if i remember right. and then 64 bit which can hold as much as RAM as you could need but only focus 4GB of it on 1 program. Will a higher bit OS come out so you can focus more than 4GB on a single program? or would this even be necessary?

thanks

They will probably make something better like they always do, but as for right now it really isn't necessary with the stuff we use today... We will need it in the future though.

Magicalpops you have been given some bad info. A 64bit OS manages memory in the same way as a 32bit OS does it just can manager more of it. Windows 7 64bit does a very nice job of managing memory (and it's most definitely does more then 1 program at a time). Computers have been dividing memory up between multiple programs since the good old DOS days and before. Where did you get this load of crap info from anyway?

A single 32bit app in 64bit Windows gets 4GB of virtual address space to play with. A native 64bit app gets 8TB (can be increased in the future).

hmm im a little bit confused lol. i cant remember where i read it but i read that having a 64 bit OS meant you could have a lot of ram, but only 4gb total could be applied to a single program your using. example: if i have 7gb RAM and im playing LoTRO then only 4gb of my total RAM could b applied to LoTRO. is this incorrect?

I heard that 64-bit OS could use about 13.7 Petabytes of RAM.
A 32-bit OS can handle a maximum of 3.5gb of RAM and see it fully. Any more that that, it will still be used by the OS and programs (apparently!), but will not be visible.

So if you have 4 ram slots with a 32bit OS you should go:

Slot 1: 1GB
Slot 2: 1GB
Slot 3: 1GB
Slot 4: 512MB

I can't confirm this, my new build isn't done. But the internet generally has reliable info. People say they have used 3.5gb and seen all of it.

I wonder what will come next... probably 86bit or 128bit.
So far it has been doubles everytime.

2-bit
4-bit
8-bit
16-bit
32-bit
64-bit

Catch my drift?

Also, Magicalpops. If you have a 64-bit OS then it goes into the terabytes of RAM that can be accessed. So open up a 64 bit app on a 64-bit OS then the programme can use as much as needed.

But opening up a 32-bit app on a 64-bit OS only 3.5 gb of it can be accessed. Is LOTR 32-bit?

To explain again with example. You have a computer running a 64-bit OS with 16gb of RAM. The OS can address all of this.

Application 1 (64-bit) - wants 10gb of RAM - it gets all of that.
Application 2 (32-bit) - a maximum limit of 3.5 gb of RAM is placed on this application.

oo i get it now. so even if your software runs 64 bit if your application only runs 32 it can only get 3.5
and as for LoTRO im not exactly sure. idk how to check >< but if this helps you find out at all, it runs DX10

This is interesting because when i run Halo(original) on my Win 7 64bit build with 4gbs of ram it doesn't reckognize the Ram, it says there is none there. Is this because it's a 32bit app? halo runs fine though.
