32mb cache drive plus 16mb in a raid?

hi,

Can I put a 32mb cache drive and a 16mb cache hard drive together
in a raid array? I bought a 16mb cache drive already, a samsung,
and I'd rather not have to go to the bother of returning it. I just
want the two drives, as two 500gb drives are quite enough for me.

I assume this would cause me problems, right?

And/or, would it really make much of a difference speed wise
if I just go with another samsung 16mb cache drive?
 
Any reason you don't want to buy another samsung?

I don't know that it wouldn't work but I also don't know if anyone has tried before. I don't think there's a real reason it shouldn't work, the cache is just fast temporary storage on the drive. To be safe I would say get drives with the same cache but I'm thinking it will work fine.
 
It will work, but the thing is that cache on a drive, for the most part anyways, is simply a marketting gimmick. In most cases, only a very small portion of it is used, typically under 1 MB.

However, if by RAID array you're talking "RAID 0", it won't do much for you anyways, despite cache.

ah ok, good to know it's just a marketing hype thing. I was thinking
of doing raid 5 or something this time, not raid zero.

So then the only thing about this samsung drive is it only has a one
year warranty, but that was my fault for not checking. I guess
I will go ahead and two of the samsung's. It's a very popular drive
on newegg.

you need at least 3 drives for RAID5. If you are concerned about losing data, go RAID1, otherwise, stay away from RAID
 
RAID5 is striped but it has data security as well, you can lose 1 drive and still be able to rebuild the array. Parity data is spread across all drives, if 2 or more drives fail you will lose data.
 
yup. RAID 5 is awesome. RAID 1 is good for mirror images, as stated. There's nothing wrong with Samsung drives. If you're careful what you buy, some of them are quite good.
