$3500 Budget

It depends for what, right now, your dual core would probably outperform the quad core in most situations, specially games. The difference wouldn't be huge, but still there. The quad would be better at multitasking(heavy multitasking) and is eventually(arguably) more future proof.

You could probably get away with a dual core for now.

What is your current system ?

nvm it says Intel Pentium D CPU 3.40Ghz, 250GB HD, 256MB Graphics lol Windows Vista home premium 32 bit, 2gb RAM... aka crap, how does it compare to this system

You current machine is far from crap. Its a very good machine for certain tasks, just not to do everything. Its actually considerably better than my current rig.

Maybe vista wasn't the best of all ideas for your rig, XP would probably have been great for it.

The build that was suggested by me or by others is considerably more powerful than your current rig. Your graphic card is unknown, it is actually unknown if you actually have one, the ones suggested are truly powerful ones. So are the processors.

dsella, This forum is not a place for making private business, it's a place to let people get help for free and let people learn from other people's experiences. You shouldn't do that.

10, but i would get 64 bit ulimate for your OS

id go with 8 gigs of ram with vista ultimate ;)

+ 1

go with vista home premium

Why vista home premium??? Ultimate is A LOT better :D

ok here are a few more things I need to cover
- if i want to overclock what cooling options should i look at?
- I cant find a decent cpu cooler
- will all this fit inside the case properly
- I cant find where to get 8gb ram unless I just change quantity to 2 for the 2gbx2
- Newegg dosn't ship to canada???!!?!

No, Newegg currently doens't ship to Canada. Will do in the future though. One of the best air cooling is the one I suggested (Tuniq Tower)

I'ld suggest VISTA HOME PREMIUM 64BIT OS, and the Radeon 4870 video card, but other than that looks very good. Other things youi might consider

pc9600 ddr2Ram

NCIX ships out of Vancouver and quotes in Canadian dollars if you indicate so on the site. NEWEGG doesn't ship to Canada at all.

there seems to be a lot of thoughts and suggestions going around but no decisions, at the end of the day it come down to your personal preference and weather or not you want to spend all of that $3500.

Few thoughts
1. You suggested overclocking, if you are going to then go with the lesser processor
2. the operating system will depend on your needs, here is a good comparison of the 2 to help you out, the extras are also listed
http://techgage.com/article/should_you_buy_vista_ultimate/
3. a couple of cup coolers i would suggest, look at the reviews and see what you think, i have just used newegg as it is easy to find them

with this bracket

or this

4.4gb of RAM will be fine for your needs
5. you said that you are going to be multi tasking, so i would suggest getting 2 monitors, the money that you save on the cpu if you are going to overclock could be used for this, it will mprove you productivity and it looks cool . . . lol

hope these points have helped you

Overclocking isn't necessary, it seems your knowledge is a little limited. But keep in mind that the Intel offering is very good at overclocking, so its always a possibility for the future. Just going from your Pentium D to any Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad will be an amazing increase of speed. Overlocking would incraese that a bit.

Newegg doesn't ship to Canada, that is why I made my suggestions with NCIX, they are about the best in Canada. And if you are on a budget(which is obviously not your case), you can even price match with NCIX. However, Newegg should soon ship to Canada, my guess is that somewhere in October they will, but that's just a guess.
