360 Hatred!

I hate the 360 that I bought a year or so ago. I have used their stupid Windows Media Center app to connect to my PC's video files. I can make the connection but can the 360 play anything? NO! Due to the lack of codecs, I cannot play .avi, .mp4, or .mpg. What the hell Microsoft? I'd like to watch a frickin' movie that's not formatted in your junk .wmv proprietary codec.

Bottom line, do not buy a 360 for use as a media center. I am not a console gamer so now this white box sits in my room and blinks(the lights are oh so pretty when they're not red). And I would like to keep from talking about the interface, total knockoff of the Wii and the navigation is very clunky. That's my last Microsoft console and Vista was probably my last Microsoft OS. So there ya go. (Rant over)

I made the same mistake as you by thinking the 360 would be a great media extender, I was disappointed until I got a PS3. If you wanted a media center console, the PS3 is much better. An app called PS3 Media Server allows you to play just about any format you could want, even HD content. To do this on an xbox you would have to get TVersity which works great but configuration can be a hassle and it doesn't do HD content very well.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. With the latest updates my Xbox360 and several of my friends who also have Xbox360 play avi and mp4 videos just fine. Maybe it has something to do with the source of the files or the way the videos are being made?

I haven't had a problem with my 360 for awhile, the last one was the DVD drive acting up, and that was because of how it was sitting.

I always went with the ps3. I never really liked a 360 all my friends have them, I actually always and will always prefer a ps3.

I never liked playstations since the PS1. the PS2 had shitty graphics and even worse games, and the PS3 is expensive and also suffers from a plethora of crappy games.

i like my Xbox360, its never had any problems and i like the games on it too. mine works just fine for a media machine, idk what your problem is, besides not wanting to convert a couple files to a proprietary codec? seriously it makes no difference, most of my movie files are avi, i just convert them all to wmv and it works fine.

When I download a movie, I want to watch it then and there, I am impatient. But seriously, why would I want something that cannot be universal? I am not really angry towards the design itself, I am angry with the stupid engineers behind it. Microsoft sure doesn't care to put that new(stolen) interface on there to attract buyers with the wow/OMG! approach. But when it comes to raw functionality, Microsoft and the Xbox engineers are pinching the pennies.

And I think by using proprietary codecs you are promoting DRM. Microsoft is going to be the main force behind DRM(before Apple), because they're the greedy business criminals who want all the money they can get(2nd to Walmart and the Walton family). Besides their codec is not even cross-platform without additional software.

Sony has been the hardcore gamer's pioneering company since the PS1. If I recall correctly, Sony actually had the idea behind the dual joystick controller. And all consoles have that now, Sony also was the first to use a disc. I wish I'd bought a PS3...

Panasonic 3D0 actually used CDs/Disks, WAY before Sony's consoles.

As for the topic at hand... I have no problem with either console. I enjoy both a lot. I haven't used either as a media center though.

I agree completely!

I didn't even know that thing existed. I was wrong about the discs then.

Go use it for media and then if you make it back with any hair left we'll talk about enjoying it. :P

The PS3 has a lot of shitty games.. And I've been turned off to getting one, when my friends say the updates take forever, I also don't like playing shitty games. As for watching movies, I have an Apple TV.

Meh. I use my computer for my music, and my PS3 for my blu-ray/dvd's and/or the dvd player for dvd's.

I just use the consoles for gaming and Live Messaging friends to think of games to coordinate to play together.

The big titles are on both and that's what matters, plus it has Blu-Ray. And at least the PS3 does updates that matter in terms of functionality, they decided on an interface before the release. They didn't change their UI and play mind games with buyers. And one more thing that the PS3 has out of the box, wireless. What is the Xbox 360 wireless adapter, $99? Another stupid decision by the engineers. Or was that the extra money needed to get Steve Ballmer out of driving Lincoln Continentals?

What are some of the games on the 360 that are not available for the PS3?

Halo and Gears of War being two main ones. And TBH, I don't want to game on wireless, whether it's out of the box or a separate adapter, I also don't like the light controllers.. And I kept hearing that the PSN will be free? I'm not sure if I like the sounds of that.. I pay the yearly fee of $60 because I can gladly afford it, and it gives me a filtered online playing experience. And being an avid LAN gamer, I don't see any PS3s at the LANs..

It also looks like this is exclusively for the 360.

Halo and Gears of War? Straight out of Microsoft Game Studios and their brainchild games. Nah, I don't play those, never have liked Halo or GoW.

Playing wireless might hurt your ping by a HUGE amount(by your standards), actually 3ms. And it's not which I would prefer between wireless and wired, it's the principle of the matter. Sony put it in the box and Microsoft didn't.

PSN is free, and it's not that bad judging by what little I have seen. A friend battles people in RockBand online and has no trouble. I am not a console gamer so it would be odd to see me at a console LAN unless I was just hanging out. I don't see how the consoles would differ in a LAN environment other than games available and the fact that the PS3 doesn't require network cabling.

I added in a GTA IV expansion, exclusively for the 360.

And there is no right or wrong side in this debate. It's no different than PCs Vs Macs. It comes down to preference. I don't want to play repetitive racing and sport games. I purchased the Original Xbox for Halo 2, then got the 360 for Halo 3. I don't need a Blu-Ray player, since I have an Apple TV, which gives me access to rent or buy HD movies and TV shows.

And being a LAN host, no one has ever asked me if others will have PS3s..

The decision all comes down to the preference of games. Sony has always had better RPGs on their consoles. Xbox has always had plenty of shooters. Good games are on both consoles it just depends on your taste. I initially bought my PS3 so I could play MGS4 and Disgaea 3 and Resistance 2, all PS3 exclusives. I initially got my Xbox 360 so I could play Gears of War and Chromehounds, again exclusives. All of these are good games and tailor to different types of people.

XBL is a paid-for service that gives an excellent lag free (usually) online experience. PSN is free but you have to deal with people that can lag so bad the console crashes (happened to me on LBP).

The Dualshock 3 is about as heavy as the 360 controller so you can't argue, if you have a sixaxis then you just have an old controller and need to stop b**ching, it's just a controller, its weight has nothing to do with your skill level.

The playstation hardware has everything needed if someone wants to setup a console as a media center. Streaming media onto your PS3 usually doesn't even require transcoding, PS3 Media Server is a java based (i.e. it works on every OS) app that allows you to transmux(this is not the same as transcoding) videos into a format suitable for PS3. Xbox has no wifi, HD-DVD is a failed format, and the media center extender thing just plain sucks.

If you get the newer PS3s then you get full PS2 and PS1 compatibility, if not, you get at least PS1 compatibility. Xbox has a limited amount of games that are backwards compatible, a decent sized list but still not even close to the full game library.

The PS3 has a better interface IMO, it is clean and I can have a nice fullscreen wallpaper, and if I want, I can skin the icons. The NXE is huge, full of ads and useless junk, and has a giant silver somethingorother hiding your wallpaper. PS3 wins on interface, no doubt.

The PS3 has a web browser, it is really slow, but at least it is there and requires no workarounds. It even supports flash so you can watch youtube. The xbox has a limited online component, the netflix thing is nice but the PSN store allows you to rent movies as well, just at a pay-per-download kind of thing rather than a monthly subscription to netflix. I'm sure the netflix video library is bigger but the PSN store movie library is quite impressive. Also, with the PS3 I can put movies right on its hard drive without having to go through hoops, just pop in a flash drive or usb hdd and copy it. I can also upgrade the PS3 hdd with any 2.5" SATA HDD I want.

Sony is stingy with their controller technology so games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero have to still use a USB adapter to support the third-party controllers. As a result, the RB and GH controllers are not usable on the opposite game. Any guitar will work on either game with the 360.

The playstation allows Linux, which really isn't a plus since Linux runs like molasses on it but at least it has room for experimentation. About the only "hacks" readily available (i.e. without console mods) for the xbox are done by modifying the media center.

So basically the PS3 has better media center capabilities but they are both gaming consoles at heart. I don't even know why this is PS3 vs 360, it should be console vs PC, then you have legitimate points to argue about.

First off, I already mentioned that it comes down to preference, which makes this post some what useless, since you're backing up the PS3.

Second, I don't know nor do I care what controller I was using when I played on a friend's PS3, it was light, and I did not like it.

I could pick out more points, but that all relates to personal preference.

I wasn't backing either console, I was just stating what I saw about each console. I owned my xbox for 2 years before I ever though about getting a PS3. I tried for 2 years to find a method of playing videos of any format or resolution on my xbox and failed, the first week I got my PS3, I found an app that let me play every single video on my hdd without fail. XBL is superior online, far less lag and when there is lag, usually better management of it but I think that is due to the paid service, weeds out the people that shouldn't be playing and pays for the upkeep of the system, wich provides better service.
