3870 x2 and my mobo

This is the second card now that doesnt work with my mobo, the first being a gtx 260.

My mobo is 1.0 and the card is 2.0, lots of people say it should work, in fact there are a few people that have had both cards in the same mobo as mine.

Is it possible that A) it just wont work in my mobo?

or B) that my psu is insufficent

I had it hooked up via one 6 pin pcie connector and 6 pin converter?

Could it be that i need the 8 pin?

If so where can i buy one as my psu is modular but the seller didnt bother attaching it to the psu.

Any help is greatly appreciated

As for the card, the fan was spinning and there were no red lights on, on the card itself.

The problem was no output to my monitor

Never tried to see if it would work or not. Using a 6 pin for a 8. Even if it worked it would seem to under power it under load. Have you tried either of these cards on another computer?

PCI-e 2.0 is backwards compatible with 1.0, you are fine there, the psu is also sufficient as far as i can tell... but you need to connect both connectors properly for the card to function, so if it has a 8 pin, it needs an 8 pin wether or not you need to adapt it...well adapting will be fine

Using 2 6 pins actually works, it even says it on the box, using the 8 pin is for overclocking (something along them lines), but xbit have also said that it works with just a 6 pin.

This being the case to power it would i be ok using the 2x4 molex adapter in to molex connectors that have other things on them, ie, fans, cddrives etc or should the leads be completly free?

it doesnt matter too much, but avoid hooking up the video card on the same rails as something like a hard drive or water cooling, as they might draw too much power away from the video card.

edit: and let me be the first to say you probably need a bios update, and if that doesnt solve the problem, then you have a broken pci-e slot!

^^ my 8800 gts works perfectly so is it possible my pcie slot is broken?, and i only updatred the bios today so as soon as i get a pcie conenctor im going to try it

well have you tried the working cards in the supposedly broken slot, shoudl be able to run the card in the 2nd alone shouldn't it?

Yeah the 8800 gts is in the slot that the 3870 x2 wont work in :S

Iv got on emore thing to try :/ which is an actual pcie connector when it arrives.

Finally got it working, it wa smy monitor that didnt agree with the gpu

so obviously my gtx 260 worked as well :P

i cant beleive something so simple as a monitor change can get it to work :P

ill know for future now :D
