I was thinking of upgrading and buying a 2GB ram kit to go along with my 1GB kit of 2x512mb but is 3GB of ram really needed for anything or would it just basically be a waste of money?

just make sure that you are using the same amount and speed in both channels if you want to make use of dual channel

it might be more useful in the future with DX10 etc when everythign becomes more demanding so it might be a worthy investment for the future

With my new computer in my sig it is coming soon I bought 2GB than yesterday i bought 2 more GB it will help with a lot of stuff especily vista when it takes up over 1GB but especially with directX10 coming out.

if your running Vista and you also game then i think 3Gb would be nice :)

Dont do it, just use the 2x 1GB DDR2-800 instead, that way you get the added bonus of dual-channel.

I have 2GB and I have run out of RAM a time or two in the past... Typically it's when I'm running like Premiere, Photoshop, and maybe a few other things. However, I also don't run a swap file.

Is it really safe to disable swap file on windows os? last time I done that with 1gb of ram and play large games it froze my pc.

You can disable it but if you run out of memory bad things happen. That's why most people tell you not to disable the swap file unless you have at least 2GB of RAM but with some games now you probably need more RAM than that.

Just for laughs I made a program that runs you out of memory. I think I got an error message from windows (I know I got the message I just don't remember where it came from, windows seems like the logical place though) that said "catastrophic failure" it was funny in a geeky kind of way :P

I've never had my computer completely freeze when I ran out of RAM. Typically the program I'm running will lock up and I can simply CTRL-ALT-DEL out of it. Most of the time I have some warning before anything too bad happens...As in I've never lost anything due to this :P

where do u disable or lower your swap file usage?

<--points to sig

i definitely noticed an improvement in gaming when going from 1gb to 3gb (hit the 32bit limit, then upgraded to 64bit) to 5gb of ram. of course, the improvement was far less when going from 3 to 5 then when going from 1 to 3, but it was still a noticeable improvement. the main thing is less hard drive access due to the ability to load more textures into memory. more memory also means that you can mod your games with LARGER textures to have greater detail and visual appearance.

you should check PC games max ram specs, the latest pc games so far i guess requires a max of 2gb ram.
erm...Max ram? don't you mean minimum or recommended ram?

keep in mind that just because its recommended or the min ram a game needs doesn't mean it wont run better with more ram. i'm pretty sure that every game will run better if you give it more then the recommended amount of ram.

You could but your video card also has to process those big textures, don't think that if you get 8GB of RAM you can put massive textures in and expect it to run smooth unless your video card can handle it.
