3GB of RAM useless or not?

EGS

Hey,

I read somewhere that 3GB of RAM is useless and you should go in doubles, like 2GB and 4GB and so on...is this true?

My server is running CentOS 64-bit Linux OS and I have 3GB DDR2-800mhz RAM on it; it won't boot correctly with 4GB (for some reason, don't know why yet).

Just wondering if having 3GB of RAM is a bad thing or if the extra GB is ignored or what? I have 4x 1GB DDR-2 800mhz RAM sticks in it..

Thanks for the help.

the reason u can only see 3G might be because of the bios on the motherboard.
an no i don't think u will notis a difference between 3 an 4G

EGS, you will notice a difference. you and i use our computers for different purposes but when i switched from two to three gigs i noticed quite a change especially while playing games. im a bit of a multitasker. id say for someone running a server on a 64bit OS, three gigs would definitely be worth the money.

Make sure you always have pairs. But 3 gigs is fine as long as it is two 1 gigs and 2 512's.

whats the reason behind this? never heard that before ... educate me :D

haha i know, it's pretty much common knowledge. but if you actgually don't know it is because motherboards require doubles in order to run in dual channel mode.

i wasnt being sarcastic man. i really am that dumb.

hard to believe, i know.

so by having three one gig sticks, im getting less performance than with two 1 gigs?
