3GB ram does it hurt speed

With running vista now it seems that i am using a lot of memory just at idle. I would like to upgrade to 3gb seeing as much more than that isn't used by 32bit OS's. Right now i am running corsair xms2 ddr2 800 2X1GB. should I upgrade to 2X512 or just throw in another stick. Also will either of these options hinder using dual channel with the sticks I have now? Thanks for the help

Dude at custom pc store today told me there was no point in running 3gb of RAM. He said RAM only runs in groups of gigabytes. >_<

They share gigabyte for dual-performance or something..?

Dunno if what he told me was true. -_-

what he told you is definitely not true lol. he works at a PC store and said RAM only runs in groups of gigabytes?

anyway, upgrade 2x512 if you want to upgrade, that way you can still use dual channel configuration

i think itll be overkill to run 3gbs really, i mean if ur a heavy programmer, graphics art design, or just do so many tasks , then its understandable, what are u doing thats making u run soo much memory ???

No point, since vista sucks it, you could have 512gb of ram that it wouldn't make any difference while using vista

what? he is talking about adding another 1 gb to his 2 gb, and he wanted to know how to configure it to get the best performance

I know what he's talking about, i don't think you know that vista "reserves" the ram that isn't used so there isn't point it adding a extra gb of ram unless he had like 1 gb or less

i know all about Vista reserving RAM. what do you mean it reserves RAm that isnt used. are you implying that when the computer starts up, any RAM that isnt being used is reserved by Vista, meaning that you cannot open any other programs? because that seems to be what you are saying. so maybe you can explain what you are trying to say a little more clearly...

What i meant with what i said was that vista will reserve any amount of ram if it isn't use, if you open a program it'll free the amount of ram from vista, and like i said what would be point of having 3gb than the 2gb if the memory is going to "idle" while isn't being use.

Ok, I understand now. I had thought that vista was just using so much of my ram, but what it sounds like is that its kinda like a bank in the way that it stores ram. Other programs go to the bank to take out ram. So no point in upgrading right now.

What it comes down to is, if your not using at any one time more that 2gb of ram, upgrading to 3gbs will not increase performance. If you are using more than 2gbs and start using your virtual memory on your harddrive(slow) then upgrading to 3gbs would help.

I use Visual Studios 9.0 Beta (Codename Orcas).

That is pretty slow, but I don't know if that is my processor (3ghz) or my RAM(1gig)... or both.

I'm planning on getting a new processor at the end of the year... most likely one of the quads (the $266 one as-of the 22nd), and maybe another gig of RAM. This is all on XP.

How can you tell if your ReadyBoost does anything in vista... I tried it on another comp and didn't see any real results.
