45nm

I heard that all 45nm CPU's have G0 stepping. Is that true? If so I want to go with this 2.5Ghz Core 2 Quad by intel, sell the free game that comes with it, and have spent no extra money.

If not, should I just go with a 2.4Ghz since I can get one that specifically says it's a G0 and OC it easier? It also comes with the same game for free.

Here are the two CPU's.

So do they OC as good or better than 65nm G0, and which one is better?

they are different processors, so im not sure you can compare them based on their stepping. it is enough to say that the 45nm will overclock better no matter what, and it WILL perform better then the q6600

The Q9300 has a 7.5 multiplier. This may very well limit the overclocking potential. The chip may be capable of overclocking higher than the Q6600, but you will need a board that can reach 500 fsb to get there. Also, you cang get the Q6600 w/HSF for $189 at Frys.

I have no idea if that board can hit 500. Most people top out on air w/Q6600 at 3.6GHz. The Q9300 would need 480 fsb to match it. That is pushing it for some boards. Now dont get me wrong, I am not pushing the Q6600 over the Q9300. I just wanted to point out the potential issue with the multiplier and let you know the $190 price on the Q6600 before you spent $300 on the Q9300.

Where is the Q6600 $190? I saw the Q9300 for only like $20 more than the Q660 was on tigerdirect so I thought I'd sell the game and make my money back. Also with 45nm it runs cooler so that makes it easier to cool with a fan and heatsink.

I bought mine about 2 weeks ago at Frys electronics in Indiana for $190. Last time I was in there (3 days ago) they were still selling for $190. I would be willing to pick one up for you if you like. Also, the April 20th Intel price cuts will bring the Q6600 price down. As far as the 45nm running cooler, that is absolutely correct. However, as far as oc'ing, heat will not be your problem, the multiplier very well might be. I really wanted the Q9300 myself until I saw the 7.5 multiplier. Considering that I wont be able to reach a significantly higher clock than I can with the Q6600, I decided the price difference was too much.

Alright, I'm confused. Here is what I want. I want a CPU that can be overclocked to like maybe 2.8Ghz or 3Ghz easily, that can be cooled by either the stock cooler or my current cooler for my AMD.

Cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835106102

P.S. If I can sufficiently cool either of those CPUs OC'ed to those specified speeds with that thermaltake, do you think I could get the stock cooler for either of those to fit on an AM2 socket since a lot of heatsinks are multisocket, or do they make stock coolers single socket? Because I plan to sell my old CPU and board to a friend and don't want him to have to buy a whole new heatink for it.

Both of those CPU's will hit 3GHz very easily. I ran my Q6600 at 3GHz with stock cooler for about a week and had no problems. However, I would recommend putting a better cooler on it to run 3GHz for the long haul. The Q9300 would produce less heat at 3GHz than the Q660, BUT....... Intel ships the 45nm with a much smaller HSF. And no, you will not be able to put the stock Intel HSF on the AM2, they use a different socket.

Alright, but how well do you think my thermal take will cool either of those?

Also, frys doesn't say whether I'm getting B3 or G0 stepping, so if I get B3 I'll have OCing issues as well.

I have purchased 4 Q6600's at my local Frys in the past 2 weeks (1 for me and 3 for family members), all of which are GO. Most everything on the market at this time is GO. Your cooler would cool either CPU just fine at 3GHz.

Alright, so I think I'll go with the Q6600 at fry's, but I won't be buying anything for a month or so.

Another question. When people OC, do they leave it like that constantly, or just OC for when they want to run something higher? Also, how much would it shorten the life of the chip to OC it to like 3Ghz?
