4800 vs FX60

Greetings.
I have been pondering on what is the differences between these two products: AMD X2 4800 and the AMD FX60

This may sound rather silly, but which one is superior?
By all means criticize me if you want, I would just like my questioned answered. And last buy not least, how grand of a power supply will be needed for either of the two?
Thank you.

i believe the fx60 is a dual core 2.6ghz processor, and the x2 4800 is a dual core 2.4ghz, so the fx 60 would be the superior processor.

personally i would go with the AMD X2 4800 because of the lower price. Especially since the only things that differ in the two of them is the operating frequency, the voltage, and the price. And, I would think the you would need like a 400watt power supply for either.

The FX60 is better than the 4800 (they are both dual core) but the FX60 has unlocked multipliers which is better for overclocking
and generally FX is a different line than X2
and in both cases you will need a decent PSU
i hope this helps !

Ah, I see.
As you mentioned above, no i do not intend to overclock any products.
Thank you for your assistance.
Hopefully, in the near distant future, the FX60 will decrease in price.

it already did a while ago it dropped around 300 bucks after AM2 came out but i think it will drop more after Conroe comes out

i'd get the 4800+ over the FX-60 just because its so much cheaper and you can probably hit 2.6ghz with ease with a 4800+ sort of like i did with my x2 3800+.
of course, mine has less cache.

If you're not overclocking, the X2 4800+ is the better choice. The extra 200Mhz isn't worth the money, what you're paying for is the unlocked multiplier.

There are also new AM2 CPUs, namely the X2 5000+ & FX-62 to consider.

I think the Fx-60 is built entirely for gaming. 4800 X2 is for multiple purpose.
Considering that the FX-60 and the X2 4800+ are almost 90% the same, they can have such different uses? No.

Question..

Hello,

A question: WHat does Unlock Multiplier means?

Also, if they are both dual core why one is called FX 60 and the other is called AMD X2?

I guess I can understand why X2 is dual core, but what is the FX mean dual core?

Thank you

One is called the FX-60 because it has unlocked multipliers, which I will explain in further detail.

When a processor has an unlocked multiplier, you can raise the core clock speed without raising the FSB/HTT, which puts more stress on the motherboard and the RAM.

For example, the Athlon 64 FX-60 runs at 2.6GHz (200x13). If I wanted to raise the processor up to 3GHz by OCing the HTT, I would need to go up to around a 230MHz HTT to be able to reach 3GHz (230x13). If I wanted to reach 3GHz without raising the HTT by raising the multiplier, I would just raise it to 15x, so I would be running at 3GHz (200x15).

yes, which you can do with a regular athlon 64 or athlon 64 X2... the name "FX" implies that it has the unlocked multiplier... which is like gold to an overclocker :D quite literally... since it costs so much! lol

that makes no sense whatsoever. the 4800+ is just the FX-60 with a different model name, 200mhz slower, and no unlocked multiplier. so, the 4800+ is the SAME CHIP when it comes to performance per clock!
